  • Starter button problem
  • Has anyone tried to rebuild the starter button on their naa? Mine quit making contact when I pushed it (if I ground the end of the wire it turns over) so I know it's the button. I removed it thinking I could just take it apart and clean it so it makes contact ,but I don't see how it comes apart. I see what I thought is a small snap ring on the part that pushes down into the shifter, but it is solid even though it isn't tight on the shaft. there is a small hole 180 degrees around from where the wire attaches approximately 1/8" in diameter ,but I can't see what it's for. I would rather rebuild this than buy a will fit piece of junk that may or may not work, been there done that too many times!!!!!! I've looked in all my books and online to see how it comes apart to no avail, Hope someone can help me on this .God Bless, Beth and Allen.

  • I have had one apart!! One should not ruin the insulating washer(ughm) while cleaning the dirt and grim out of the area of the brass contact washer. I ended up with a new on also, although a little smarter than I once was

  • I took one apart once to see if I could fix it. I DO have a LOT of experience in such things as a former appliance tech, but I could NOT figure out how mine was supposed to make any contact! It was off a purchased tractor & I knew no history, so it's possible it was faulty from the beginning. I was fortunate in that the one I bought has worked perfectly.
Maybe it's a good thing I couldn't fix it as there was no way mine could go back together & stay together!

  • Not all things are amenable to repair. When a light switch stops working I dont even stop to think about it - I head to the hardware store not the shop 🙄

  • One of the thermostats on the Maytag cooker stopped working years ago; I decided to take it apart and see if I could repair. That was something else; tiny parts. I managed to get it back together and it has worked ever since. Maytag use to make good stuff but of course they were sold to someone else. Not sure of the quality today. This is an old cooker, nothing fancy, but as long as it will work and cook my food, I am happy with it.

I also took my digital camera apart after I dropped it and it stop working. Talk about some tiny screws. That was a job. I found where it knocked a ribbon cable loose, got it back together and it worked. Then I made the silly mistake of putting it in my back pocket and ended up cracking the screen. I could still take photos with it but you couldn't see how to frame the shots. It was a cheap pocket camera so I just discarded it.

  • I think I'd spend $10 for a new one.

  • I gave up and ordered one from Stiner with seal and cover that goes over it and a new shifter plate gasket. I hate not rebuilding or repairing things but sometimes I have to bite the bullet and order things. It has nothing to do with money, I have always repaired things since I started working on things as a teenager almost 60 years ago. I've worked on everything from kids toys to Tractor Trailers and everything in between, although I'll NEVER call myself an expert, I'm not ashamed to ask for advice even on things I've had experience on. Thanks and God Bless, Beth and Allen.

  • Take a look in a old catalog, if there is no separate parts listed chances are pretty good it was not meant to be repaired.
