installing tach on 8n/ setting rpm
Hello all, I have a early 1950 8n that doesn't have a proof meter and I was wondering can I hook up a proof meter or a tachometer to it? Would the governor already be ready to hook it up? What I am trying to de is read the rpm's so I can set the carb properly Thanks guy's for any help

Re: installing tach on 8n/ setting rpm
Installing the later tachometer depends on the vintage of governor you have. The ones for the governor have a threaded boss on the back end for the governor cable. Generally replacement governors have this boss with a screw cap over it. For temporarily measuring rpm you could use a automotive test meter or small engine rpm meter that picks up a signal from one spark plug wire.

Re: installing tach on 8n/ setting rpm
My governor does have the threaded cap. Is the internal parts of the governor all set up for the proof meter? I bought a digital tachometer from Amazon and it was all over the place so I returned it. Where’s the best place to get a spark plug one? Thanks

Re: installing tach on 8n/ setting rpm
There are various tachometers available that work by either a pickup from a spark plug wire or sensing a mark on the crankshaft pulley. However before you spend the money for one, most people just adjust the carburetor by ear. A tachometer is good, however for setting the maximum engine rpm with the governor linkage the first time a new governor is installed. Hopefully others will join in on how they adjust the carburetor. There is the low speed mix, high speed mix, and idle speed.

Re: installing tach on 8n/ setting rpm
I thought some would jump in on adjusting the carburetor. There are some on line instructions: http://www.myfordtractors.com/carburetor.shtml among others. If your governor has the screw on cap on the end, a tachometer cable should be able to directly screw on. However you should be able to do the adjustments by ear and not have to spend for a tachometer.
