  • shifter stuck,,, again
  • Hi, 1947 built, 8N. Shifter stuck in first gear. Last time I was able to run it in the shop and removed the top cover and slid the plate over to unlock it. It is worn, so I am careful for everything STOPPED before shifting. My question, is there some trick to get that unstuck without removing the top cover, like hold the stick up or down as it is moved, etc.
Also, can that plate that moves the gate be replaced without tearing the transmission apart?
I didn't see how it could be built up by welding with it in the transmission.
Thank you. Been on this site for decades.

  • If you have a recurring problem of sticking in two gears a worn shift gate is the likely cause. The shift gate is part of the shifter on the transmission cover assy. I repair them with the cover removed but not removing them from the cover by building up the worn fingers with a mig or tig welder. I then grind them with an angle grinder to the correct shape. It is easy to see the wear on the fingers as all fingers and should be uniform. Go by the ones with no wear and rebuild them all accordingly. Not a difficult job as welding repairs go and when done you will notice a huge difference in the way it shifts and no more sticking in two gears. Or, you could locate and buy a replacement cover but check the gates before you buy it.

  • Hi, Will rebuild gates. New stick coming as the 'square' areas that fit in the gates on the old stick are now round. top most 1st and 3rd. shaft (rail) is worn on both sides of the notch but I'm going to let that go. Thanks for info. Chy

  • How about jack up the rear end and take the strain off part of it?
