Points setting
Does anybody know the dwell setting for a 1952 8n Ford side distributor. Thanks, Bob

Re: Points setting
NAA spec shows 35.5 to 39, I would not expect the 8N side mount to be significantly, if any different.

Re: Points setting
I've never seen a dwell spec for the old Ford tractors. I wouldn't be surprised if someone has figured it out but I haven't seen it any where. Mark

Re: Points setting
Yep, never have seen any dwell specs... but if so, how does one 'adjust' the dwell by point setting'??? OP MANUAL/ FO-4 tell how to set timing per inspection hole and hash marks on flywheel and timing light. If issues abound, you have other problems; wiring most likely. Tim Daley(MI)

Re: Points setting
Dwell and point gap are INVERSELY related, and more point gap (less dwell) equals earlier spark timing.

Re: Points setting
Just set the gap. Dwell will follow, as Bruce said. I have seen dwell numbers in manuals for Ford tractors, other than side mount 8N, that are either in crank degrees or mis-print, because too large to be possible. I have also see expressed as a percentage instead of degrees. I have measured both front mount and side mount (OEM & after market) with a degree wheel and with a dwell meter and find disagreement there, too.

Re: Points setting
Your OEM Operator's Manual and the I&T FO-4 Manual are essential tools. 4° BTDC at 400 RPM seems to sound familiar. FORD 9N/2N ESSENTIAL OWNER/OPERATOR/PARTS/SERVICE MANUALS:
