  • 2n Wheels rusted to the hubs
  • Saturday, I was helping my brother with his 2N. He has one tire that is completely flat on the back. It will not hold air. His plan is to replace both oversized tires with the original size, but both rims are rusted to the hubs. We loosened all lug nuts but could not get them to budge.

I know it is usually recommended to drive the tractor in a figure eight pattern with the nuts loosened an 8th of a turn until the wheels break loose, but what do you do if you cannot get the tire to hold air to be able to do that? It is pretty tough just to move it right now. Thanks for the help in advance.

  • I've only had flat tires on the bottom, never on a side... ; > ) So, you say you are replacing the tires anyway so you'll need to jack up rear, one side at a time or both at once. Have you tried to inflate the flat one? Sometimes it'll hold air enough to move it around with. You are trying to loosen the 6 inner wheel nuts right, and not the 8 outer hat rim to center discs? Don't want to try removing centers from rims until you have the entire unit on the ground. If wheels have been on for a half century they could be rusted on well, especially if tires are loaded with Ca Chl and leaked. Look around valve stem and if rusty, chances are they are loaded. Sometimes if you get the tire just off the ground to relieve some of the stress on it, it may loosen up. PB and some gentle tapping around the center disc with a 2 x 4 may loosen it up. use a good 6-PT 1-1/6" Socket and breaker bar. Try and avoid any slippage that will round off the nuts. Option #2 would be to haul the tractor to a local AG Tire dealer and let them do it.

  • Spray some PB Blaster or Kroil from the back of the rim where it meet the hub. Big hammer, with board, and strike

  • Pretty common thing. Put that side on a stout jack stand or blocking, loosen the nuts, have someone hold a 4x4 firmly against the disc and whack the heck out of it till it breaks free. Or simply get some tire irons and remove the tire from the rim while still mounted on the tractor. I prefer the latter unless there is a need to separate them.
