  • Arps Half Tracks Performance
  • We got almost 2 feet of snow this week in northern Michigan providing a good opportunity to put the 8N with Arps half tracks to the test. I found the tracks did well and only sunk about half way to 2 thirds into the snow while the front wheels sunk down to the hubs pushing the snow and making snow balls in front of the wheel which put a big drag on performance. I experimented with adding weight behind the tractor by putting cement blocks in my Dearborn scoop which helped the front end float a bit better, but front wheels are obviously the week link. I have seen some videos of Ferguson tractors with Arps half tracks and skis and they were doing much better in the deep snow. Anyone out there have experience with half tracks and deep snow? I got it stuck in a deep snow drift last year and spent the better part of a day digging it out. Problem with this set up is if I get it stuck there is nothing that can come to my aid and pull me out.

  • Can we assume you are using a front blade or Vee-Plow? We can't see the fronts in this photo but in the OEM ARPS manual it is shown using a 2000 which would have 16" fronts. Would front wheel weights help? I had 6.5 x 16 fronts on my 8N and added the Ford 2-pc front wheel weights for my wintertime snow plowing setup, but only used a rear blade, no Halftracks, and they worked great. My 11.2 x 28 rears were loaded with Beet Juice (Rim Guard) and I did not use any chains. I did NOT have the luxury of a SteelCraft Cab though!

    Is This You Jeff???

  • Tim, the 8N with V plow and half tracks was owned and driven by Steve Parker who sadly passed away in 2015. Steve Parker was a board member of the Ford-Fordson collectors association.

  • No, that picture is not me and I am not pushing a plow, just driving around in the deep snow. Front wheel weights would have the opposite effect causing the front end to sink deeper, I need the front end to float in the snow like the tracks so I can drive thru/over 2 feet or more of snow and deeper snow drifts.

  • I've used the half tracks quite sucessfully in deep snow, and my experience was the same as yours- the front tires were pretty lackluster when it came to steering. I'd try using the brakes to lock a rear wheel to direct yourself where you need to go.

  • Your right, steering performance goes out the window in the deep stuff, and adding weight in the rear scoop takes poor steering down to no steering. With my existing front end configuration I am getting bogged down in the really deep stuff and loose my steering. I think I have taken it as far as I can with wheels in the front and need a plan B, skis or full tracks. I would have to make new tracks with wider track spacing to get them to go around the front wheels and rely on brakes for steering but with my leaky axle seals I have not had reliable braking for years, so skis my be the best short term solution for this winter.

  • How wide are your front tires? I wonder if the skinny 19Ē tire would tend to cut through the snow better ? It would probably sink in deeper too so I donít know if it would work better or not . Maybe skis would be best and maybe you could adapt some old snowmobile skis .

  • Just like four wheel drive, it helps you get farther away from possible help if you get stuck lol. What model tractor are you running and what do you have for front tires? I dont know how small of airplane skis might be available. You might have to make your own skis to try.

  • My Arps is on a 1950 8N in standard configuration. Skis are probably the answer although there is not much space from the front axle to the boogie wheel. I found pictures of Ferguson tractors used in an artic expedition and they ran the tracks all the way to the front wheels with some kind of bracket to keep the front wheels from steering, but I do not have enough track to do that. All the pictures of Ferguson tractors with half tracks and skis have the same ski set up and they do not look home made, so there must be some out there somewhere.

  • I have seen skis on tractor front wheels in Alaska. But the front tires stuck down thru the ski about 4 inches. The ski had an opening in it is what Iím trying to say. Sorry no pictures but I know that they exist. Airplane parts places in AK may help
