  • Stranger than fiction......really!!
  • So, I noticed that my upper rad hose on my late model 8N side distributor model was leaking so I removed it and ordered a new one. In the antifreeze in the outlet spout from the head I could see something! Acorns.....so far I have fished out eight and when I reach in with my finger there are more! How could the tractor operate as well as it does? Any ideas on how far I should go? Do I need to remove the head? Dave

  • Could have gotten down there from the upper tank if no thermostat was installed.

Yes, I know that the water flows upward and that acorns will float unless waterlogged.

Any kids been around tractor in past?

  • And, could they get there from the radiator through the water jacket or would they have had to be put into that outlet in the head? Dave

  • Acorn could never pass thru radiator core tubes.

  • Re: Stranger than fiction......really!!
  • I realize that. I had just wondered if some little critter might have stuffed them into the bottom cavity at some point. Or, if the bottom rad hose was off, maybe stored them in there but again, impossible as how would they get past the water pump.
Mostly I wanted to see if anyone had ever experienced anything like this or.....better yet, if someone had any easy answer?

  • Re: Stranger than fiction......really!!
  • I am considering two options for removing the problem. First would be to run the tractor with the top rad hose off and see if the water pump would force them out the top opening. Secondly would be to remove the water pump and then attempt to flush the block by running a hose into the top opening. I have no knowledge of the internal area of the water jacket in the block. Is there enough room for those nuts to flush down and out the bottom? David

  • If I were in your shoes, I would do this.
With the upper rad hose removed, I would remove the lower rad hose and rig up some sort of adapter to mount a garden hose to the water pump water inlet.
Might be able to find a rubber plumbing coupler that would work, or wrap it up and clamp it with something like old inner tube.
Turn on your hose full blast, and let it flush everything out.
Maybe start it for a minute so the water pump can add a little water pressure as well.

  • Josh, that is a good idea. I never throw anything away so I expect I can get that done. I am now waiting for a warm day. Minus ten here this morning. I do not use the tractor this time of the year but just do my maintenance. Dave

  • You can insert an image tag manually < img src= or use the one time optional image url box but you have to remove the s from https; otherwise it will fail to insert the photo. The admins need to upgrade the code to allow https because many sites default to https. I mentioned this before and got into an argument with someone over it.

  • Thanks so much Kimberly. I ended up getting 30 of these hickory nuts out and then, after trying different methods could not find any more so I buttoned it all up and refilled with coolant, started it and let it warm up. After the thermostat opened the coolant flow into the top of the radiator was good so I feel I may have solved the problem. How did this tractor run so well for ten years without overheating? A big thanks to Henry Ford. David

  • My apologies. Why is every one of these forums different. Is there a tutorial? I use postimage and they give five choices of what to copy and paste.
