  • Serial number and build date info
  • I have come into possession of a 1959 Ford book listing several service bulletins, etc for 8N tractors. Included are some s/n and date breaks for some of the changes...mostly in 1949. It might help some narrow down their tractor's "birthday".

August 25, 1949 = s/n 215043: change in bolt that holds oil seal to retainer & cup and center housing.

August 25, 1949 = s/n 215050: change to reverse idler gear thrust washer.

August 29, 1949 = s/n 215759: changes to draft control spring, plunger, rocker and lift cover plate.

September 1, 1949 = s/n 217307: changes to hydraulic pump intake control valve and bushing.

September 2, 1949 = s/n 216989: changes to dash panel, steering gear and drag links.

Yes, I noticed the discrepancy. Serial number on Sept 1 is after s/n on Sept 2. Doesn't anyone proofread anymore?

  • This is interesting Here is a question for your book.

In the 8N series does it talk about when they started putting the Generator on the left side of the engine ?

I'm looking for some engine dimensional data on where the Generator bracket mounts to the side of the block.

The measurement of the projections that extend from the block and where they are located in relation to the head surface etc.

The pic below shows what info I'm looking for.
    Thanks in advance.

  • 1950 Serial number 8N245637 - 8N343592
This was a big year for changes to the 8N. At serial number 247571 the engine oil pump was redesigned to use larger gears to provide more volume. At serial number 252845 the one piece shifter handle with the small forged knob was changed to a threaded handle with a black plastic knob that screws on. The TSX-33 carburetor that had been used for several years was changed at serial 260595 to the TSX241 model. A new engine block was cast so the distributor could be relocated at serial number 263844. The engine now had a side mounted distributor with separate coil on the right side and the generator was moved to the left side of the engine. The "8N" casting mark on the left rear of the block was changed to "8N-B". The Ford script was embossed into the rear fenders at serial number 273178. Dealer installed accessory lighting kits eliminated the headlight "wing" mounts and replaced them with round stamped steel mounts. At serial 276115 the carburetor was changed to the TSX-241A. The Proofmeter (tach and hourmeter) was added to the instrument panel at serial number 290271. At serial number 313112 the carburetor problems were solved by a change to the TSX-241B. At serial 337916 the engine oil filler/breather tube was modified to better keep oil from splashing out.
