  • Brent:

When a tractor was traded in to a dealer back then Ford encouraged their dealers to repaint the tractors in the latest color scheme. In the late 1950s and on for quite a few years that color was blue. That is one possible explanation.

The other explanation is that somebody just felt that it looked better blue. By now (I own a dozen N tractors) I have seen all sorts of color schemes - even JD green. Maybe the blue paint was on sale - who knows?

  • If I read that right...it sounds like you lost your Grandpa. Sorry to hear that, but what a great thing to do by purchasing the tractor.

The folks here helped me and countless others learn about these machines. I hope you keep it and Register the tractor on this site. Always good to see another old Ford tractor fall into good, caring hands.

    Good luck,
    Kevin

  • Hey Brent

They painted the bottoms blue to make the people think they were buying a newer tractor.

The tractor serial Number and the engine serial number are one in the same.

The tractor does not have a seperate number.

The engine serial number is located on the left side of the engine, looking from the rear of the tractor, and is located just above the exhaust manifold in the front.

Remember these numbers were hand stamped and not very easy to read sometimes.

    Hope this helps :)>!!!!

  • Just a footnote to add to your comment about repainting to make them look newer. I was in the Dealer Relations Dept at Ford Tractor where those decisions came from. I also know that in the early 1960's after extensive research it was found that used tractor customers desired the traded in tractor they were buying to look like the newest tractors. Due to these findings Ford Tractor Division strongly urged dealers to clean up and paint trade in units in the new color schemes. This was a very effective practice and helped turn many a dealers used equipment part of the business into a profitable one.
