Couple Changes for 1940 9N
This was posted by Scott PA on the N-Board a little while back from a 1940 service bulletin. I copied and pasted it over here for a reference. "The smooth rear axle was used until Oct. 1940 but no serial#, the cast all. grille for a steel hood used until serial# 45899"

Matt.........my drawings show that 9n4235-B was released on 7-9-40.This included the riveted hub.I don't know if it went into production at that time or not because of the TSB Scott posted.Maybe Randy or others can shed a little light on this. don b

Re: Couple Changes for 1940 9N
Matt, I don't know if there were more than one version of the smooth axle or they just got better at doing it, but the early versions had a splined shaft in the center of the axle that was fairly easy to see. Later versions were much smoother and gently tapered to a dimple. I have one of each on 9N-516, I didn't plan it that way, I was just happy to find a smooth axle of any kind when I put it together. It is rather neat now as I can easily point out the difference......Kelly.

Hey Kelley, how are your photography skills? Could you take some high resolution pictures of each and send them to me or Ed or post them into the History forum? Regards, Patrick

Kelly, I know what you mean. I think they just changed the way it was made. Not a real improvement, as they still broke. Matt

Re: Couple Changes for 1940 9N
Matt.....these axles and hubs were "butt" welded.Started out with the large hub with a stub made into it and then butt welded the long axle shaft to it.I would guess this is the reason they broke.I have not seen a 9n broken axle,at what point on the axle did they break? don b

Don, that's a good question...so good I don't have an answer. Next time I'm at Palmer Fossum's, I'll ask him. When he was a kid he had a '40 9n with smooth axles that broke. I'll see what he says and post back after my next visit there. Matt

Matt....Kelly.....Mr.Brock told me the rear axles were made this way because the dies for the casting of the hub were not finished when they went into production. don b
