  • i was just curious if anybody knows what is invovled in adding a pto to a 39 ford.i noticed a large plug at the back of the houseing i assume this is for draining the fluid from the rearend,even though its not on the bottom.like i said i am just curious for now as i havent gotten her running yet(good ol swartznegger is sucking up every spare dime that people under $100k a year have)thank in advance for the input

  • The n-series tractors came with covers that thread over the pto shaft for safety reasons. This is probaly what you are seeing. Take off the cap and there should be a pto under there.

  • There should be a pto shaft. maybe something happen to it Or the seal started leaking and the farmer covered it up. I would take it off and investigate. Have a bucket ready when you do it to catch the oil. it might just need the shaft, a bearing and seal. Check the manual setion for the parts manual under tractors. This may help you.

  • hi kirk thanks for the info tried sendin you a message back but i am haveing trouble with my email account.anyways you are correct there is a pto according to the 2 manuals i looked at, the "plug" i was refering to seems to be a factory cover to keep dirt and stuff from clogging it up i am going to investigate it tommorow.thanks for pointing me in the right direction

    I don't know how new you are to the N tractors. Could it be you are just talking about a simple pto cap. This cap(cover) will stick out about 3" or so. It should have a flat square surface on the end you can put a wrench on and open it. There you will find the pto shaft. You can email a photo. When emailing someone on this board make sure you leave off the word remove at the end of the email address.

  • yep thats a cap and the shaft is under it,oh yeah i am pretty new to the tractor world

  • Oh, I like that EZ fix. Good bunch of guys here. Willing to help. I learn new things every day. Stay tuned and good luck on your '39. Send me some pics of the '39 if you get the chance. Alway like to look a old iron. Just remenber to drop the remove off the email.
