  • Red Paint for 8N
  • I have seen the red paint for the Ford 8N described as "Vermillion Red" and also as "New Holland Red." Which, or both, is the correct red paint for a 1949 Ford 8N?

  • Hi Doug-
The original 8N red paint is listed in the Master Parts Catalog as "VERMILLION" enamel, Ford part number M2822. Attempts to get the original shade have been close but no cigar. TISCO makes both a FORD RED and a NEW HOLLAND RED, both, in my opinion lean too much towards the 'orangy' side. They also make an IH RED, which, in my opinion matches very closely to the original Ford Vermillion. John Smith had a recipe for the red made by DuPont-Centarii and lists the number on his web site. You can take that number to your local DuPont distibutor-dealer and he'll mix up a batch for you. They simply plug in the code and they get the exact mixture amounts and voila you have your sample. The best example of the original red paint I have found was at one of clubs I belong to show a few years ago. The guy had many Farmalls restored and the red paint he used was from an IH dealer, but he didn't have the paint code or part number handy. As you will discover, there are many opinions out there on what red is best. Sometimes you just need to be your own judge and go to shows and ask questions. When you see a shade you like, try to corner the owner and I'm sure he'd share his secret with you. Hope this helpds somewhat.

    Tim
