  • Top Links
  • I have bought two tractors now, a 9N and a 2N, and neither came with I top link. I have bought three top links off E-Bay and no two of them are exactly alike. Could someone post (or tell me how to get the info) what top link(s) are correct for the 9N's and 2N's.

Also, is there any place to go to get carriage bolts in the original size and fine thread?

  • Paladin,
Not sure if this helps or not. I have been busy learning as much as possible about these old tractors. When I read your post it got me going on the rocker usage. I had no idea how and why it worked until now.

  • It is a picture I found browsing. I am not sure who it belongs to.

The "properties" state it is Tyman.

  • The first had only 2 bolts, then 3 bolts around 1940, then a light duty with a number of round holes close together in the center that may have only used 2 bolts around 1944 with the 2nd 3 bolt style available for heavy use for extra cost, these were during the 9N/2N days, all 8N's used the heavy 3 bolt type.

  • Wow! Thanks for the info Scott, that's a lot of changes over those years. I've never seen or read anything about all those different versions.

    Hopefully Paladin will post pics.

  • Other than color, I don't think they changed from 9N to 8N. I believe they changed to the turnbuckle type for the hundred-series.

Are the ones you have the flat bar type, but different from each other? Keep in mind Ferguson had a version he issued w/ the TE's & TO's. They are a little different from the Ford version(more adjustment holes).

Your post has made me realize I don't have a decent pic of any of my old toplinks. Can you post a pic of what you have?

  • Bob......this was discussed earlier on here. You may find the posts if you look close. There were changes in the number of holes in the bars.If my memory serves me right,I think they started out with just 3 holes and went up to 5 holes.I have the prints if you can't find the posts here. don b

  • Don: I did search the archives and found the discussion but, unfortunately, there were never any pics posted. It really can get confusing reading about the various numbers of holes and which were square holes and which round and so on.

I got yet another top link thrown in as a sweetener with the '39 9N deal. It has two pieces of notched sheet metal riveted to it so it would have notches facing upward if it was in service on the tractor. You could conceivably use the notches to hold something, like a piece of chain or hydraulic hose, to keep it from dragging on the ground.

One place where I have not been up to speed is in getting with the digital camera revolution and posting pics. My wife bought a new one - a Kodak 6.1 Megapixel, so I have to master this and take some pics of my strange collection of top links and post them.

By the way - is there such a thing as weld on repair ends for top links? One of the ones that I bought off E-Bay (didn't pay much for it) has a SERIOUSLY worn end.

  • Paladin....seems like Kelly said that at one point they made some "stiffner" plates for the top link. This may be what you are describing. don b

  • I'm not Don, but there are some Ferguson implements that engage "the rack" on the toplink. There is a pull-type tandem disk & a mower, they both have yoke that drops into the notches & links back to the implement.

I haven't seen any Dearborn implements that use it.
