  • I would also advise using a lvl beam then you could cover the beam with oak to make it look like its a oak beam we do it all the time just a thought

  • Phil, 20 feet is a long span for a solid beam. Others have given good advice so far. It all depends on what will sit on the beam. If the second floor sits on it from both directions plus the roof then you have a lot of load. An lvl or microlam is a good choice. You will most likely want 2 or them side by side to fill the space of a 3-1/2 inch wall. Your local supplier can size the beam for you. I doubt that an 8x8 oak would carry the load without sagging. If you want oak contact an engineer or architect. I wouldn't use anything less then an 8x12 and even then I would check the actual loads.

  • How big that beam needs to be can only be determined by the aprox. weight it's going to carry and where and how many jackstands are being placed under it.

  • I would recommend a microlam beam over an oak beam. I believe it will have less sag.

  • My GUESS would be at least an 8x8 beam. You need to know what load will be on it, structure and contents. I would consult an engineer to be safe. Your local materials supplier can probably put you in touch with one. Or, maybe your local building department where you get your building permit.
