  • Need advice on used tractor
  • We recently moved from Colorado to NW Arkansas. I sold my 8N when we left and am now looking for another tractor. I found this on CraigsList here. Any opinions on a Massey 35?

  • I missed the link over to the ad, but I see you've acquired the 35. Please post some pics of it when you get the chance. I'm a big fan of the Masseys.

  • Well, I bought it for $2200. I'll let y'all know how it works out.

  • One must evaluate their needs when deciding what to buy. Will it be a weekend warrior machine for mowing, food plots, plowing snow or everyday model for greater utility use? Nothing wrong with the earlier Massey's, but I'd caution about the later ones. I just finished working on my friends 1984 1010 model, and what a piece of junk. That it was a diesel was the only saving grace. Engine was built by a Japanese company no longer in business, and no one took over the manufacturing or parts end of it, with parts virtually no longer serviced, and other issues. For the few parts I could get -filters, the cost was ridiculous. Just saying do your homework well...

  • The only thing against that tractor is no power steering. It will steer much harder than what you have been accustomed to using. I think the 135 series was even worse. Other than that they were fine tractors. Excellent hydraulic lift too. SoS.

  • Google the name and you will get tractor data. Good hp 35-37. Great fuel economy. Very dependable working tractor.

  • The MF 35 is a great small utility tractor, and the Perkins diesel versions, as in the ad, are by far the best. Moreover, the pictured 35 is the Deluxe version, i.e., live PTO, full gauge package, (originally) PA rims, (the pictured unit does not have PS, but most do), etc.

The MF 35 will do about twice the work as will an 8N and the Perkins diesel versions will sip fuel doing so. I've worked them hard and it is just about impossible to put much more than a gallon per hour through one of the A (or AD)152 Perkins engines. Moreover, the 5" stroke diesel engine will amaze the 8N owner with its torque.

The pictured 35 looks to be a well cared for tractor and the price looks to be very good, absent serious issues.

I owned 2 MF 35s in the past. They are great small utility tractors but they are 55+ years old. Most parts are available but prices will be higher than similar parts for the ubiquitous 8N and not so readily available. Additionally, MF/AGCO dealers are less common than are CNH dealers (at least in my area) and I have had VERY bad experiences with MF/AGCO and their dealers.

That said, I would likely buy the pictured tractor (after a phone call), sight unseen.
