  • Slightly off the beaten path with my comments.
A close friend just ordered a 25 HP Mahindra tractor for a local dealer. I tried talking him out of it. I tried steering him towards a JD or Massey Ferguson instead as I think they're the best choice for new reliable tractors in today's market. My concern was for parts availability. Granted one hopes you'll never need major parts, but what if you do? A couple years ago I sold my completely restored 1950 8N with Superior loader. It would lift anything, even a full 5' bucket load of gravel. The problem was I couldn't steer it without power steering. I bought a 2012 JD 2520 (25HP) with 5' quick detach bucket and loader, 6' york rake, rear weight box with only 90 hours on the clock. The original owner who only used it to rake his gravel driveway. Original owner bought it, took out a 48 month note. On month 49 he passed away. Sad story, but I did stumble into a great deal, his son just wanted it gone. I rushed to his house, trailer in tow and a stack of $100 bills.

  • The best tractors on the market today are the Kubota models. JD, M-F, if you want a small compact mowing/utility machine. Personally I'd stay away from anything M-F. I worked on my buddy's 1984 M-F 1010 a few months ago and parts were not to be had. I could get a fuel filter ($10)and an air cleaner ($30) but that is it. The dealer told me parts were not easily available even when new. These were built in Japan with a now out of business engine maker there and no one picked up the aftermarket parts for them. No one stocks many parts around here. Closest M-F dealer is 30 miles away. STEINER TRACTOR is about 35 miles away but they only stock certain model parts. My old neighbor bought a JD Compact Utility tractor and he can mow with it and plow snow but cannot hitch a plow or disc to it. My 2nd choice would be a NH Boomer. PowerMaster or Workmaster model.

  • The local owners around here just wish they would build some storage for spare parts so they dont have to wait weeks for repairs.

  • There’s a fellow near me that lost his crankshaft in a 95 hp Mahindra and can’t get parts to fix it .
