  • USPS -Time To Privatize?
  • The USPS keeps raising rates, business keeps decreasing, and they wonder what is going wrong. The latest fiasco I've had with them is on an item I bought on ebay on Novemer1, 2017 from a seller in Oregon. I promptly paid right after winning the auction and item wasn't shipped thru the USPS until November 7, 2017. On November 9 it arrived in the Denver Distribution Center and left on November 10 for my town. Nope. As of 11/11/17 still no package. The tracking numbers show it left Denver and went to, ready, Pittsburgh, PA! I'm in Michigan!!! So now it is still setting in the distribution center in PITTSBURGH, PA!!! Un friggin-believable...It may have been here by now if I went with Pony Express delivery. I'm a big supporter of the US gubment getting out of the mail service and spending those $$$ on better things. Oh, by the way, I'm still waiting for three packages the USPS has 'lost' in the past year. One was sent by me to a friend a few towns away, the other two were ebay items that never arrived. All declared MIA and they've now closed the files on them now.

  • I had a good mail order book business going until my lists I sent out came back with wrong address scribbled on them.It was costing a buck for postage to send new lists to regular costomers.Sent a list to a good customer, in came back wth wrong address.Dug around and found customer phone number.Gave him a call and he told me he lived near the post office and knew the people that worked in the office.Sent a list with new address.Got an order back for 160 bucks woth of books. When I started selling books 50 cent would mail most books.Went to 2.50 probably higher now.Book rate got changed to Media mail.Priorty mail looked real good at first but went nuts in a short time. The computor did the most damage to the book business.Dealers I bought from closed up shop left and right.Classified ads went from 35 cents a word to 3.00.Ups aint any better.Used to get small parts delivered to my shop for 50 cents now cost 7 bucks.Im 80 years old now. Shop is closed, to hell with it.

  • Agreed, Tim.

Such services should have been privatized years ago.

    Don't hold your breath.

  • I have had exceptional service from the USPS, especially from E-bayers. Tracking is great, when it shows arrival in Orlando I know it will arrive next day. If my puter is on it will show delivered as soon as it hits my mail box. Got several packages recently, many from the west coast and arrival prior estimate is the norm. UPS postal is another story, I buy things from Owings Mill, NJ and routinely they take over a week and tracking is non-existent.

  • If it is privatized, You can bet the cost will go sky high.
It is bad enough as it is.

  • Guaranteed prices will soar. City delivery is easy to make money. City to city is easy. As soon as that cute mail truck delivers to a rural address, it loses money.
Every aspect has been bandied about. Different delivery days to reduce cost, eliminate Saturday's, Every other day delivery. How about those prescription drugs? Welfare check? Unemployment check? Oops. That might get delivered tomorrow. Hope your not desperate. Postal rates are about to go up. That letter is suppose to go from 49 cents to 50 cents. Privatize? Watch the rates go up. Especially when Grandma has been getting her mail delivered to her front door for the past 50 years and now it's changing? Betch'a the ol' senator gets a ear full on that one.
You might notice that some Ebay sellers also mark things as shipped when they haven't been. That might be worthy of checking the tracking number when it shows up.
Different number, eh? Oops. Not the first time.

  • What?

When was the last time that (whatever) costs increased after privatization?

  • Touché ... if anything, competition with private companies should see price/cost wars...

  • Certainly, you cannot be claiming that such is a result of privatization???

  • My lawyer sent me a letter last month, his office is 5 blocks from my house. Took 9 days to get the letter. Other than that I've had good luck with USPS. knock on wood.

  • USPS tracking is a joke, along with a lot of their other stuff.
In the last month, I have received 3 parcels that the first scan was ""delivered"".
    What good is that?

  • Re: USPS -Time To Privatize?
  • I have a parcel coming in now. It was shipped Nov. 8th, first scan today, in my local town. No mention of the time scanned. NOT marked "out for delivery".
