  • Fairbanks moris
  • I am refurbishing a Fairbanks Morris 1937 one and a half hp model Z engine.
The magnet for the magneto at some time had been re magnetized in the wrong
direction. It would run but the spark was not what it should be. A friend that has
a magnet charger re magnetized it for me. I removed the fuel tank and cleaned it
good. After I clean the engine and paint it I intend to fabricate a cart for it. I have
two pairs of iron wheels I will use. I will use this just for a running static display.
Does anyone have a secret way to remove the rivets that hold the brass tag on
    with out damaging it?

  • Lol Coupe ! I once had some illiterate neighbors that referred to a motorcycle as a Harvey Davis. One of them came into my shop years ago when I had a test instrument connected to my stereo speakers and said "You have one of them Orthopedic Scopes". Thanks for the chuckle ! SoS

  • Dave I have removed many a nomenclature plate in my days. I applied many hundreds more in the form of company asset tags. Most are attached with 3/32" fasteners called drive screws. Most drive screws can be pried up and out with a tough bladed pocket knife. If they refuse some times tapping the head lightly will help jar them loose. Pry them out just enough to get a small pair of vice grips on them then pull and twist till removed. If that fails then use a small grinder like a dremel to remove the head, don't grind the tag just down close to it. Once the tag is removed there usually is enough of the drive screw left to get the grips on. if that fails then drill out the remaining drive screw with the correct size drill for the replacing drive screws and you should be good to go!

  • It's probably all together the wrong method but, I would center punch the rivet, then using a small drill bit, drill about 3/16 deep , then step up the bit size to 1/8" or so to see if it loosens the top of the rivet. If you get the nameplate off, then just how to remove the rest of the rivet may be try twist it out with pliers or possibly drill more. Like I said, probably all together wrong. I have never attempted it so I'm simply guessing this will work.
