  • Dan, ya'll ben shootin' out yer backdoor agin, ain't ya??? Didn't know Marshall had any deer...

Classic line as Tyler posted: "...I don't why they call this stuff Hamburger Helper, it's pretty good just by itself..." Randy Quaid, aka Cousin Eddie.

I have all the wildlife cook books that the late, great Fred Trost use to have from the old "MICHIGAN OUTDOORS" show. There are several venison, caribou, and elk recipes in them using Ham Help. Try it in meat loaf too instead of crackers. I'll scan them and send to you...

  • Hey Tim,
When we used to camp in Marshall we saw more deer and with twin fawns and even triplet fawns than I've ever seen anywhere. One early evening I sat on my golf cart up on high ground to get a phone signal. While on the phone, a doe worked her way to within about 10 feet of me before she decided to leave.
Sorry, Dan. The owner of campground does not allow hunting on any of the property.

  • We try to put about 100 lb. of venison burger in the freezer each year, along with the sausage, jerky, steak, roast, loins, and ribs. 200 plus lbs. each year. Haven't bought beef in over 15 years.

  • Yep....fix it for the granddemons, and call it goat burger helper. They eat it like there's no tomorrow. My daughter and I use it instead of ground beef. Only time I'll buy ground beef is for a nice juicy burger on the grill. Eating a bowl of deer chili as I type this. Another good one is what a dear departed friend used to call "taverns". Ground venison flavored with your favorite sloppy joe seasonings, generously ladled over bread. Or, goat burger steak smothered in onions, with a little brown gravy over the top, served open face. Gonna try to put another one in the freezer this evening with a bow.

  • It works good for bee stings. Dampen the plaster ( band aid ) and sprinkle on some HH.
    Apply plaster over sting area.

  • Many, many years ago we tried hamburger helper. It was a one time event. Don't remember why, but we never bought it again.

  • We mix ground venison with regular hamburger all the time to up the fat content. Then we use in in spaghetti sauce, meat loaf, hamburger helper, add some onions and cheese and make burgers on the grill. Also wrap the MEAT LOAF with bacon and mmmmmmmmm...

  • You got it right! An old Polish butcher told me years ago to quit mixing pork with my venison hamberger and switch to 70% ground beef. Mix it 25 to 30 percent and it with give it the perfect blend of fat, and hold the meat together better.
Dont go any leaner than 70%. It gives flavor and texture and cant be beat.

  • We use taco seasoning in our ground venison and fix as burrito with lettuce, tomato, shredded cheese, onion.
We also use the venison in Chili. 1 tbsp. vegetable oil,2# venison browned,2 beef bouillon or broth, 3 medium onions, 2 cans of diced tomatoes, 1/4 c chili powder,1 tbsp. paprika 1 1/2 tsp. garlic powder 1 tbsp. cocoa, 2 tbsp. cumin,1tsp sugar, 1/2 tsp. sugar,1/2 tsp. pepper, 1/2 tsp. celery salt, 1/2 tsp. mustard, 1/2 tsp. sage, 1/2 tsp. thyme, 2 15 oz. cans of kidney, chili, or refried beans.
    Tastes like real hamburger.
