  • What oil should I use?
  • I just bought a 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis that only has 30,500 miles on it( there was only 3000 miles put on it the first 10 years of its life). Then 27,000 miles by 2nd owner in last 3 years. This car is unbelievably clean, under the hook still looks like a new car, inside still has some new car smell. My question is what oil should I use in it Standard or Synthetic. It doesn't have the owners manual. So, guys what do you think on this. God Bless,Beth and Allen.

  • Use the Pennzoil oil selector...
    http://www.pennzoil.com/en_us/oil-selector.html?gclid=Cj0KCQiAg4jSBRCsARIsAB9ooauwySrx8DWWJPkEUdfBUCUoFe4uDL7wNvLZaRyd0E_QC5o4Z55imc4aApBWEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds#iframe=L3VzL2VuX1VTL2VxdWlwbWVudC9tZXJjdXJ5Xyh1cykvMjAwNC9ncmFuZF9tYXJxdWlzXzRfNl92OF9FRnQ4UGR6dWU=

I used nothing but Pennzoil for years and years. Never had a problem.
Now I use Pennzoil, Castrol, Mobile 1, Rotella, Walmart Super Tech. And still never had a problem. Knock on wood.
We had an 06 Marquis and it was a decent car. It will need decent shocks and the little pressure switch under the middle of the motor in the front for the power steering will need to be changed because it will leak. Also the seatbelt interlock switch for the air bags will go bad. Other then that change the oil every 5k miles and you will get 20 mpg overall. We used 5w20 of whatever my shop guy used for oil...

  • I suspect you car uses SAE-5W-20 oil -most compacts do today. My youngest daughter bought her first car last summer, a 2002 Mercury Sable, no owners manual was with it. So I went online and got one for FREE download. One of the few positive aspects of the Internet is that you can virtually find just about anything nowadays, some free, some for a fee -SEE LINK.

  • IMO. The syn oils run a higher detergent and can clean out the varnish etc behind the seals and gaskets possibly causing a leak IF it has not been maintained with syn oil. 30K miles is not far enough out of the realm of running syn oil. 2004 means a lot of those seals (rear/front main) have probably dried out and syn oil is going to leak. Would I put syn in it? Probably. And I would also be aware that it might start leaking like a sieve and cost me a few bucks to re-seal it. After that syn oil should not be a problem at all.
If using dead dino oil, I would recommend the Mobil brand, Not the syn oil as they are famous for, but the run of the mill dead dino oil that they also produce, if you can find it. I would steer far away from Shell or Havoline, IMO.

  • Re: What oil should I use? Follow up.
  • Hey Bruce, I'm probably going with syn oil,I'll give a real look over when I get it home and make my final decision. I can't get it till Jan. 2nd because my wife had surgery last week and can't even walk for a month. The car is 120 miles away so I'm going to go get it with my trailer. The 2nd is the only day I have free so I have to wait till then. I can't believe my find on this, I had a 1998 Merc. Grand Marquis and loved it,then like an idiot sold it 3 years ago.Ever since then I looked online at these cars and dream like some guys look at playboy. This car was traded in at a car co. that specializes in finding high end luxury and specialty cars for wealthy clients, so this car doesn't fit in with what they do so they wanted to get rid of it. They showed the invoice on it and they sold it to me for less than gave for it.When I went to look at and try it out I was prepared to pay almost double what I gave because of the super low miles, man was I surprised.God Bless, Beth and Allen.

  • My 96 Ford truck manual said 15/40 above 30 degrees only.We had an89 Merc that had erratic oil pressure.Dont WAG on oil for this car.Call a Mercury dealer or look for a manual in a junk yard.
