  • How do you guys do it??
  • Shooting with bad eyes.
Now that I am old and need glasses to see up close, I am having trouble seeing the rifle sights. If I put on glasses to see the sights then I can't see the targets, or I see two targets blurred together.
How do you guys sight with bad eyes?? Is a scope my only option??

  • Do you have an easy way to slide the dove tail sights to correct left and right shooting, without scratching them up??

  • That is a really good idea. Both my dad and my son like peep sights. I didn't need one till just the other day.

  • I went through that about 8? years ago. Was having trouble focusing on the rear sight, the front sight and the target at the same time.
My friends told me a scope was the answer and that I would like it.
I thought a scope on a 30 30 was like a gold ring in a pig's nose so I put my rusty but trusty Marlin away and bought a new .270 rifle and a good Leupold 3x9 scope.
I hate the scope. I will never like it. No way can I make a snap shot on a deer as it takes me too long to find my way into the scope. Yes, I can make longer, more accurate shots with this package - and have - but most of my shots are well under 100 yards so iron sights and lesser ballistics were more than adequate.
It's a part of getting older I guess. As is whining about stuff, which my post mainly is :)
Click the link for the big buck I took with it this year.

  • I think you should be happy you shot him. This way you get him out of the gene pool. And don't put yourself down, it take a sharp eye to spot antlers that small cause if the ears are in the right position they disappear.

  • HA! Looks like the one I passed on all season. I'd watch it and a button buck travel into the swamp in the mornings and back out in late afternoon. It was legal-Michigan law says one antler, 3" long min. in firearm season. By late season I noticed it was limping -badly shot rear leg wound. Then, property owner's son shot it during muzzleloading season. Most of the 'hunters' in this county use the 'if it's brown, it's down' rule. That's why we seldom see bucks with 10 or more points here. 4's 6's and occasional 8's are all we get. I practice QDM, and if more would follow we'd all benefit with bigger bucks.

  • I thought all MI had were big bucks. 50 years ago Fort Campbell military base near here seeded their property with big ones from your state and it is still the best place to hunt. The home raised ones here are getting larger but still small compared to cold country deer.

  • I put one of them red dot scopes on my pellet rifle, seems to work pretty good. Handguns I just pay more attention to the front sight and less on the rear, seems to work pretty good. Comes down to practice, you'll get to know what or where you can't see and learn how to compensate for it.

  • Not sure if its your only option, but I think its a good one. Make sure it goes down to 2.5 or 3 power on the low end. they are much better than they used to be and fairly reasonable.
