  • Is it a Hardie orPritchel Hole
  • I bought a 4" Simplex bench vise the other day. It has a 29/64th round hole in the little anvil at the back. Some references I have found call it a hardie hole and other places seem to indicate it is a pritchel hole. Not that the terminology is any big deal but I am trying to find a replacement cutter that would fit in that hole. Searching for one online has been a little confusing. Anyone know what the hole is called or possibly where I might find a cutter?
Here is a link to an ebay auction for a like vise with the cutter in place in the little hole of the anvil.

  • A Pritchel hole is round.

    A Hardy hole is square.

  • Google blacksmith hardy tool and a bunch come up in all prices. Looks like a square peg fits in a round hole.

  • found a site where the round hole on a vise anvil is referred to as a hardie accessory hole. I also think the cutter I am looking for is called a hardie (hardy) chisel.
I'll probably have to have a machine shop cut one on a lathe and grind the chisel shape. Probably way more denaros than I can afford. My vise only cost $30 so I don't want to add another 40 or $50 to that. Oh well...

  • You can make a hardy from a grade 8 bolt.Run the nut up tight to the end of the thread then cut the head off the bolt.Grind the taper slowly.I have one vise that has a hardy hole in the anvil .Go easy with the hammer. You have to knick all around the stock and break it.Find a book on black smith work.A pritchel is a pointed tool used to make nail holes in hot horse shoes.

  • Thanks 36 for that idea. I might give that a try. I was contemplating using a 3/4" drill bit with a reduced shank, cutting it off and then grinding (slowly like you mentioned) the cutting edge.

Dang blacksmith type stuff is expensive. $30 or 40 is nothing for a little hardy hole accessory. I can't do that.
