  • Got a calf
  • Happened across a "great deal" on a week old jersey bull, lol. Myself and some friends decided since we have one, we may as well get 2 more, beef for everyone! It's following the kiddos around like a dog, that may become a problem.

Guess now I'm a cow Farmer, lol!

  • Hey Walt...I switched over to Imgur last year when the Bucket went nuts. Still trying to figure out how to move files around within the app, but it has worked pretty well.

  • Pics with Imgur
  • I get in my imgur account, upload the photos I want, then at the little green arrow, select direct link. Copy the link in the box and when posting here past it into the "optional image url" box. Hth

  • I have raised quite a few bulls for beef over the years, that being said. The first few I used two good quality rubber bands and twisted each one on very tight and never had any problem. After a few years I bought an Elasterator and the bands for it and it was much faster and easier to use, and not that expensive. I always put two on just to be sure. It is much less traumatic and less messy than the knife. My son still has it and uses it all the time on bull calves and buck goats.

  • We named ours Amy
  • Many years ago we had a beef cow. Brought it home, the same size of yours. It immediately became a pet for my two children. Come time to butcher her, my children cried like babies. "Amy" the cow went off to the butcher. My children and wife would not eat the beef. I gave all the beef away, another great experiment that failed because of emotions.

  • Re: We named ours Amy
  • We told the folks don't name it, so far I've heard it called sloppy joe, food, burger, Bobo, and brownie, lol.

We've eaten almost all the chickens now, I hope this won't be a problem.

  • I worked on my uncles dairy farm for several years, and the rule was that you can never name a calf that you plan to eat one day.
Same goes for pigs and chickens. Don't name them if you plan to eat them.

  • Re: We named ours Amy
  • I tried naming three of our chickens barb, b, and que. Wife said no because they were layers. Lol
Uncle had a bull the kids named Romeo. They had a hard time eating him so they gave a lot away. Then for a while aunt would say this is not Romeo before every meal.

  • I wish someone had told me that years ago. Overall it was a great experience, along with a Welsh Pony we ha. Our children did help with the care, feeding and cleaning during that period in time.
