  • Guns on Craigs list
  • After reading Ft Smith Ar Craig's list in the general listings for things selling I noticed an ad from a guy who listed several assault rifles for sale AR 15.AKg and other rifles along with a few pistols. I thought it to be very troubling just after the attack in Florida High school to openly sell these on the Craig's list. I contacted the management of Craig's list about their policy of selling guns or weapons on their site. Never heard from them back. Last month someone was selling guns on the Farm and Garden site. Sorry I like guns but it seems wrong time to do this type of transaction without back ground checks. How are we going to try to keep some guns out of future criminal hands if no rules?

  • Not in N.Y.
  • If you live in New York you would see what gun laws are like ,I hold a concealed carry pistol permit if i go to a gun show they still have to run a background check even tho I have a pistol permit .

  • Re: Not in N.Y.
  • Yup, me too. And then you can't get a pistol until you go back to your county clerks office and get it put on your permit. Then go back and pick it up. Pain in the ass. I have the permit, why can't I pick it up and then have like five days to get it put on my permit. Kinda like your ten day inspection sticker when you buy a car.

  • I believe you as an individual can flag prohibited items on CL and help get them off.

As far as semi-auto firearms, I have my Father's hunting rifle. A model 742 Remington. Probably manufactured in the 1950s. No different than an AR-15 except appearance and magazine size. I blame the media for all this copy cat nonsense.

  • Finally some that knows what they are talking about ( in general, not necessarily the people on this site). I always tell everybody that the only difference between an AR-15 and their favorite hunting rifle is that the AR-15 looks mean... And looks don't kill.

  • Exactly! There are zero functional differences between your standard AR-15 and a Ruger Mini-14. It's all in how the weapon looks. Both are semi-auto, .223, magazine-fed rifles. The AR-15 has all the cool-looking tactical "furniture" that helps sell the weapon, while the Mini-14 has traditional wood furniture on it.

  • Amen, My Garand packs a lot more punch than a 223 and it's ok because it is a relic.
Interesting editorial in the Feb 16th Wall Street Journal called "Responding to Parkland." My favorite quote "There is also an interim solution against murderous assailants: shoot back. There is evidence it works." I am sure it does work. These shooters are cowards, attacking unarmed kids. They would likely run away from return fire, unless they were hit, then all the better.

  • Re: Guns on Craigs list
  • Totally agree.
The thing that scares me about gun control is the all or none mentality.
The people who think that outlawing guns will solve the problem are wrong.
I really don't care if they outlaw an AR, because I don't need one or want one.
But if we let them outlaw the AR, the next thing they do will be to outlaw the Mini-14 because it has the same functionality. Then on and on. So most of us oppose any gun control because of a valid fear that they will eventually outlaw all guns, if we let them start with one like the AR.
Also, the all or none mentality comes in to play with mental evaluations. Who decides who can or cannot buy a gun. I would say that we have a better chance of controlling gun violence by controlling who can buy a gun, but then who decides who is un-fit. Felons are outlawed from buying guns, but most have one if they want one and nobody check on that until they shoot someone. No one wants to give up a right, or allow profiling of a certain ethnic background because of the belief in equal rights. But the only answer that I see is enforcement and monitoring. But that will require some common sense as well and too many governmental employees do not seem to apply any common sense.
It is like the 0 tolerance laws, there is no common sense left to the decisions so many well meaning and normal people get caught in those. What we need is a return of common sense.

  • Yes, Al, but who polices the ads, certainly no one at CL? I have seen many ads that fall onto this list. I don't think any get deleted unless someone complains.

  • Re: Guns on Craigs list
  • Craigslist prohibits the sale of gun on its sites. They are rapidly removed.

Kit guns age generally muzzle loaders and are not considered to be firearms under federal laws.

Ghost guns is marketing hype. What they are selling is BS to the gullible and ignorant. So called ghost guns are guns manufactured by an individual under the law. There is no requirement for serialization, and the item cannot legally be sold, traded, or given away. You cannot buy them in kits.

A piece of metal that would require at least 20% more of the work required to turn it into a functioning serialized part can be bought without regulation. So can a piece of metal that would require 100% of the work still to be done.

There are numerous individuals capable of resmelting beer cans into ingots. These ingots can then be machined into objects. One object they can be machined into is a lower receiver for an AR. It makes as much sense to call a block of material that cannot function as a firearm a ghost gun as it does to say that when you buy beer you are buying a ghost gun.

  • Obviously you have not seen the shops and websites that I speak of or possibly you may even represent their cause. I am familiar with "Ghost Guns" and they are very real. Kits, jigs, tools and instructions indeed are sold with only a couple of hours work needed to complete the firearm, many formidable types are available. I have even seen the kits sold at small flea markets. Yes, I too like guns but let's not get lost blaming automatic assault rifles as the problem like Bill Nelson and others have just done.

  • Re: Guns on Craigs list
  • How about kit guns, totally legal and unregulated, don't even have S/N's hence they can't be traced. Big business in these "Ghost Guns", sold anywhere to anyone and primarily over the net. Even one large kit firm is from right here in our community. People just don't understand firearms and few can write about them unless they are on a mission.

  • Re: Guns on Craigs list
  • By your own admission they are not guns. You mention jigs etc. that are required to turn the pieces of metal into guns.

If you wanted a carb for an N, and someone gave you an instruction book, a lump of metal, a jig to hold it in, and a file would you consider the offered item a carb? Perhaps it is a ghost carb! Can you grasp the nonsense in that position?

A friend makes wooden bowls for a hobby. Are trees ghost bowls? The term Ghost Guns is, as I said before, nothing but BS sold to the gullible and ignorant. The term is based in drama not fact or logic.

Prior to the gun control act of 1968 there was no requiremnt for serialization of firearms. They are logged into a FFL holder's A&D books as NVSN (No Visible Serial Number). Are these millions of unserialized firearms Ghost Guns?

Running a retail business that sells thousands of guns a year and having ongoing involvement with the BATFE gives me a pretty good grasp of what is or is not a gun.
