  • All you Wood Worker guys out there???
  • I have 2 different electric miter saws. One is an old 10" Shopcraft Saw that I have had forever and the other is a 12" Dewalt that I have had for about 10 years.
The deck level of the Dewalt saw is 4-1/8" above the table it sits on and the Shopcraft deck is 3-1/8" above the table .
    Here is my Question??
Standard Board dimensions are 3/4", 1", 1-1/2", 3-1/2", 5-1/2", 7-1/4", 9-1/4" and 11-1/4". None of these combinations add up to 3-1/8" or 4-1/8", so whenever I cut something longer then 4 feet it is a pain to find a combination of boards I can stack up to hold the end of a long piece of wood when I cut it.
I know I can rip a piece to size, but why do you suppose that they make the deck heights such odd dimensions??? Am I missing something? Thanks for any input.

  • I think it has more to do with the minimum safe depth that is required for the given blade size(10 or 12")to penetrate past the top of deck for maximum cut width....if that makes any sense. Just my guess.

  • Portable saw tables are available that will provide any height desired (for long pieces) with the addition of rollers on adjustable legs. I have two of these, one for the miter saw and one for the metal saw. The rollers also extend out from the saw to get the addt'l length for long boards, metal, etc. These tables can be set up in only minutes with the use of a long level.

  • I had the same "problem" with two chops saws. Make a spacer using 1/2" plywood and 1'2" tall legs. As far as your question about odd dimensions, I don't think there's a standard for height, width or length of any hand/bench tools.
