  • When I was a Wee one
  • Taking a nap was punishment
Now it's like a mini vacation.
But I have gotten a lot stronger.
When I was 20 years old, I couldn't carry $20 worth of groceries.
Now I can do that with one finger.
Getting lucky, Is walking into a room and remembering what I'm there for.
Where the he!! are my car keys? OH! in my other hand.

  • For what its worth...this one scares me the most: When you get up and go into another room for something and then once there forget why you came in the first place. Seriously.

Remember when gas was 50 per gallon; and when you pulled in, an attendant pumped it AND washed your windows and checked your oil; a 16 ounce glass bottle of Coke was 10; milk, beer, and pop were sold only in glass bottles or tin cans -no plastic or aluminum yet, and glass bottles had a deposit; a pack of cigarettes was 25; a candy bar was a nickel; bread was a quarter per loaf; milk and everything else was cheap too. What about a new car? $6000 was average. Nowadays they go for about as much as what houses cost back then.

  • In 1962 cigarettes went to 45 cents per pack! I said I WON'T PAY IT! and quit cold turkey on the spot after at least a pack a day for 15 years.

  • HHHMMM...I remember the GULF GAS station at the end of our street after we moved, around 1965, and the cigarette machine had packs for 35. The COKE machine had 16 oz glass bottles for 15. I quit smoking in 1986 when they went to $1.00 per pack. I don't know how any one can smoke today not only with all the health issues but the cost -at $5.00 per, unbelievable how folks still smoke.

  • To make the story better -- A Friday night and my nephew and I were out shooting pool and drinking beer when I ran out. Guess I'll never forget that!

We didn't have any Gulf stations in Burlington, Iowa. Don't think there are yet.

  • The gas at the Esso station was 30 cents a gallon and the attendent pumped it, checked the oil, washed the winshield, and even had a small brush and swept the front floor boards. They gave away key chains, ice scrapers, maps, and travel brochures. We even won a tiger banana bike in one of their give a ways..

The coke machine at the corner shoe store next to the bus stop cost 5 cents and gave you an ice cold 10 oz bottle. There was a lever you pushed that shifted the bottle over to a little door you opened to pull it out.
The bus cost 15 cents, but when I got big enough, I would hitch hike to save the 15 cents, and did not need to wait for the bus.

  • Sure do, and I also vividly remember when a friend came home with a new 1959 Bonnevile and it took over $10 of premium to fill it. Everyone there at the Farmers 66 station was stunned!

  • I remember when beer was 1 cent per ounce. We could get cross eyed for $1. $1.32 if we had any doubts.
In 1956 mother, my brother and I, were miles from anywhere, and down the road came a black 56 Chevy Belaire. Awsome. That topped the new 53 RR Silva Dawn that a neighbour bought in 53.

  • When I got out of the army in 62, gas was selling for 19.9 a gallon and here in Milwaukee they had what were called "super bars" where 12 ounces of tap beer was 10 cents and a shot was 25 cents. For 50 cents to a dollar you could get a "snoot full".
