  • Massey Ferguson 300
  • a friend of mine picked up a Massey Ferguson model 300 that was not running. he added a couple batteries and turned the key (found out it was in gear) the motor turned over, smoked the negative cable. he released the key and the starter stayed engaged and continued to crank the engine over. that is when the negative cable smoked and melted. he has since replaced the cable, solenoid and the key switch and it continues to crank when the key is released. any idea on why it would do this. thank you.

  • Sounds to me that the power to the starter solenoid is not shutting off when the ignition key is released, thus the new key switch could be bad. The lead wire from that point on the rear of the switch (to the solenoid) can easily be checked with a meter to determine if it's shutting off the power when the key is released. Of course, the solenoid, even if new, could also be bad, but regardless, the problem you're describing almost has to be in that starting circuit and not elsewhere.

  • I had the same problem with my 8n when the toggle switch tore up. Mine was a double switch with wires connected to the bottom set of terminals and when the bottom contacts wore out all you had to do was move the wires up to the top terminals. Some how when I was shooting the trouble (looking at all kinda other things)moving wires and such, I got one of the wires on the a wrong terminal and it would start and run but would not shut off, I would choke it down until I found the problem....sorry I don't remember what wire I had wrong. I'm sure someone way smarter than me on this site can tell you which one. Roby
