  • Coolant - What Type?
  • Late last summer I worked on my buddy's 1984 Massey-Ferguson 1010 Compact Diesel tractor that quit running -no power at all. The problem was everything had shorted out somehow. Anyway, I got it running then he began mowing with it this year, then he called me last week to say it was overheating. He'd let it cool down add coolant and continue on then shortly after again it would overheat. So I go over to his house to inspect it. I spot a 2" crack at the top of the radiator so pull it out and take it in to get flushed and repaired. Turns out the shop I had been using for years had close d up. the next nearest one was 45 miles away. Then I was in another town 15 miles away and was getting some parts at the local CNH dealer and asked if they did or knew who could repair radiators. They told me of a guy nearby who worked out of his barn so I called him, took it over and he had it ready the next day -$25! Now I'll be reinstalling it but not sure if I can just use standard green Prestone anti-freeze. The manual only says it comes with 'special factory coolant' no specs given. Oh, when my buddy's brother came over to watch me work -neither he nor my buddy are mechanically inclined -the `brother said,"...did you tell Tim that the tractor had been overheating for years???..." Well, that explains how everything got shorted out.

  • By now Tim, you should have received my e-mail. If not, and though I'm no chemist by any means, AF is AF and any recognized name brand you select should cover the temperatures (both low and high) in your neck of the woods. Having owned quite a few diesel powered tractors over the last 50 plus years, I have yet had one that experienced overheating problems.
