  • What do you do with old gas?
  • Having several boats, I always end up with 10 to 20 or more gallons of old gas that is 1 to three years old. I just drained 10 gallons of 2 year old gas from my searay. Would you mix it with new gas or just toss it?
I was thinking of mixing it 1/2 and 1/2 with new gas and running it in my old generator.
    What do you do? Thanks.

  • To all of you... Don't burn old gas in "ANYTHING" This is something I know something about, As some of you remember I worked at a late model salvage yard for 35 years, I have burnt 1000's of gallons of used gas in my cars and trucks through the years, I've also seen several engine failures through the years from burning old gas, I'm not talking 20 year old gas, some gas was 3-5 years old and looked and smelled fine. The

Old gas can break down and then when burned will leave deposits on the valve stems then after the engine is shut down and cools the valves will become stuck in the valve guides, If the valve is stuck open -you got it, it will hit the piston- game over. if the valve is stuck closed- broken or bent push rods.
I have seen this happen and has happened to me, I lost 2 engines in an old Jeep, both broke valves. I also had it happened in one of my 8n's, some of the valves stuck open but lucky for me being a flat head engine no damage was done, I was able to get the engine running on 2 cylinders, I just let it run for 10-15 minutes til the valves finely freed up and it ran fine- knock on wood !
There's info out there on this subject, didn't have time to look.

  • An old tractor will burn almost anything.
I would mix it about 2 - 1 with fresh gas and use it in my tractor. Old gas, chainsaw/boat gas, whatever.
My neighbor's son once put gas in their diesel VW Rabbit. Was about a 50/50 mix.
The dad drained it out and asked if I had a use for about 13 gals of the stuff..
I took it and mixed it again about 50/50 and burned it all summer. The exhaust would blow white under heavy load but the tractor ran fine.

  • Steve, You need to buy yourself a 2N if you don't have one. I have run gasoline which was about 5 or 6 years old in mine. May have to adjust the main valve just a tweak. Not quite as much power but still moves from one place to another.

  • I use old gasoline (new gasoline if I have no old gasoline) to clean parts.

Once dirty, I use it along with used, engine, hydraulic, gear, etc., oil to start brush piles.

Occasionally, I make a brush pile just to use up accumulated used petroleum products.

That said, I never accumulate 10 or 20 gallons of used gasoline. If I did, I would dilute it 5+ to one and run it through my car (not two-cycle fuel with oil). Otherwise, I would dilute it 2+ to one and run it through my gasoline powered tractors but only in the summer.
