  • 'dis here's Bob.
  • For all the unknown numbers on the phone. . .
I have gotten to the point of answering them as follows, using my best southern, excited, friendly, fast talking voice I can get. . .
"Bob's Scrap Metal! Dis here's Bob! Your crap is our scrap, Our scrap is your crap.
When kin we can get it?
    HELLO??!
    Dis here's Bob!!
Then just wait. Usually there is a dial tone and no return calls.

  • Answering call that you don't recognize is a bad idea. Once you make the connection they have you as a legit number and things can get worse from there. Today most everyone uses a cell phone. An incoming call will be listed in your phone display window. If you have the number in your address book, it should display the name/business of the caller as well. If i don't know you, I am not going to answer your call. You can leave a Voice Message and I will get back to you. If a VM is not left, chances are it is SPAM/PHISHING/AUTOMATED call. If you only have a land line, this is one reason why answering machines were invented. My time is precious. My privacy too is important. There is no law that says every time the phone rings, I have to drop what I'm doing and answer it. Unlike today's young people, I don't live with my phone glued to my hand 24/7. When I'm working in the shop, at home, or in the fields, my phone is parked on the bench or table. If it rings, it will go to VM if I don't answer it. I will check my VM's when it is CONVENIENT for me. Sometimes I won't check them for a day or two either. There are much more important things in life than a GD cell phone. Bottom line, my advice, don't answer a call you don't recognize.

  • The phone used to ring virtually non stop. I started using "Bob" and the ringing has gotten less and less. Ignoring the calls did not make them stop. Answering them as a consumer did not make them stop.
Bob the scrap business made them stop.
"Bob" has become a fun way to make them stop.
    I like "Bob".
The phone rings and the wife has gotten to the point of saying, "Give them Bob."
I figure if they really desire to talk to real me, they will call back shortly figuring a wrong number the first time.

  • I get "maybe" one call a week like that. My cure was:

    me... Hello
    they... Is this Mr. %^*&%$

me... Hell no, do you think I'd be here if he was.

It cut the calls to 2 to 4 a month, but didn't bother the calls I wanted.

  • In response, if your VM gives your name, I ""might"" leave a VM. If it only gives the number I am calling, I will NEVER leave a VM. If I am calling a business, or wanting to buy an item, I will never leave a VM. If they are too lazy to pick up a phone, I don't want to do business with them. My time is important, too, and if I wanted to wait, I would send them a snail mail.

  • I like it! My wife would have a fit if I tried that. Even when their robo call says, "press 2 to be taken off their call list", they call again, and again...Grrrrrr.

  • Re: 'dis here's Bob.
  • Never press 2. Never, ever, press 2.
Press 2 and they will only call back later. Guaranteed.
Bob's Scrap metal generally eliminates future call backs.
Because all you did was really irritate them with your "stupid voice".
    So, you returned the favor.
I think that is called "Quid Pro Quo". Then again Bob don't speak Chinese.
