  • 4.6 timing set progress
  • With my daughter coming in for the holidays plus the weather I just got back to the F150 repairs. I decided with the front off the engine to go ahead & replace the oil pump too. The pump's pickup tube cap screws were a bit tricky without dropping the pan, but I managed. The new chains, sprockets, guides, & tensioners went on smoothly. The front cover is back on now, but here's a few pics before the cover....

I still don't see anything obvious that caused my engine noise. That was partly why I went ahead with the oil pump, hoping low pressure from the worn pump was starving the right side just enough to cause the noise without causing a permanent problem. I can't think of any way to know except to put things back together.

  • I once got a motor given to me because supposedly had a rod knocking,I thought I knew better and it turned out it was just the timing chain slapping itís cover..Did you see any sign of that? Are you sure you donít have a piston slap ?

  • My best guess before tear down was timing chain issue, but no sign of any cover damage or even guide wear. The chains were both still snug, so now I don't know. Not sure I can tell piston slap from stuck cam follower from rod knock. My engine noise was sometimes on cold start, but not always. On hot or cold engine it was during acceleration & above 1000rpm.

  • Just wondering. . . . Did you ever contact a Ford Parts Dept and see about an update kit for your engine?

  • No....I never understood what you meant by an update kit. Please explain.

  • Update kit meaning better designed parts or an additional part to install.
I know the 4.0 had an update kit for the tensioners I believe.
Before you close it up, you might desire to make that call and see if they have an "UPDATE KIT" for your timing chains/oil tensioner.
