  • Digital Camera -Best Buys?
  • OK, my first digital camera is about ready to be retired as things keep quitting on it -no longer will zoom in close-up, drains batteries faster than normal, will sometimes quit when uploading to library, and other things. I bought this back around 2000 when digital was first becoming popular. It is 3.2 Mega Pixels -yep, and that was top of the line state-of-the-art at the time, paid $300 then and uses a Microdrive card. Today you can get 8-11 MP on your phone camera!!! So I went on fleabay to see the choices. Prices range from $40 to $400. Seek opinions and advice on best place to buy. I won't buy anything listed as 'refurbished' off ebay.

  • ever shop Amazon? Sometimes I shop them to narrow down my choice, then look at their customer reviews & cross-reference with googling for professional reviews. That usually weeds out the trendy vs. reliable stuff.

  • Love my Canon G5X, powerful, way more than all the bells and whistles and fits in one hand. Great pics in all light conditions too.

  • Where are the best places to buy from? I have always heard the worse places to buy cameras and computers from is ebay.

  • Tim,

I have dealt with B & H Photo and never have had a complaint.

  • Check out the mfgrs sites. Often their deals will beat Ebay. Also some big on line camera shops are very reputable. Canon and Nikon often will sell refurbished cameras with full warranty too. I have a friend that bought a refurb, saved 40% and no one could tell it from New.

  • To each his poison!

    I bought a Sony DSC-HX400V primarily for one reason. Has a Zeis zoom lens which goes from 2.8 - 6.3/4.3 - 215

Used it on the last Alaska trip and was very pleased with the results. Brings those moose up next door with no lens swapping.

  • Camera phones have, and are continuing to, improve. I just recently picked up a Motorola Z-3 and I can also get an aux Hasselblad adapter that connects to the phone and has fantastic photo clarity. The lens that comes with the camera is also very good. This phone being about 9 months old is already out of date.
I believe Samsung currently has the best phone/camera features currently on the market with a good looking zoom feature that got my attention. However, I will not be spending money soon on that new toy.
Before you poo-poo phone cameras, you might desire to take a look.

  • I'm not looking for a phone, just a good camera. I want to be able to photograph a manual page that is as clear as scan or almost as clear. Pages can be up to 17 x 22 and includes detailed drawings so must be focused.

  • The canon digital rebel is the best camera I ever had. It can be set fully automatic or manual in a wide variety of modes. I bought one in 2003 and it has taken at least a million pictures. It is just about worn out and I plan to buy a new one as soon as the amazon combo package goes back to $399.
My next favorite is the panasonic Lumix. There are a dozen different versions of the Lumix and they all work well. You can basically pick your price point.
The Canon Rebel is hard to beat. It has great battery life and takes professional grade pictures with ease. It is also extremely easy to use, and very intuitive.

  • Tim, It depends on what you use it for.
Phone cameras do not have lenses worth a poop.
I have two digital cameras. My big camera is a Fuji Finepix.
I use that when I want a high quality photo.
I also have a small $100 dollar pocket camera I use for every day use.
I usually have it in my pocket. It takes a decent photo.
When ever I go out it is in my pocket.
TIP, Get a camera that has a separate place for the SD card,
not in the battery compartment. Every time you disconnect the battery's
you have to reprogram it. Also get a camera that takes standard battery's.

  • PS
  • They all will take videos now.
The early digitals the charge coupler usually craped out at 2500 photos

  • Dave-
Yeah, I'm not looking for a phone, I want a new quality camera -see my post above. 10-12 mp would suit me fine. My current unit first quit accepting the optional AC battery transformer years ago so I had to resort to using the 4 AA batteries all the time and it already had poor battery life since it was new as is. At first I figured it was the AC Adapter so I bought a new one but it didn't work either.
