  • Just got home after a 4 day stay in the ICU, Monday I went to my doctors for a long over do physical, After having a EKG they found my heart rate was 214, Doctor came in and said he was calling a ambulance, Off I went to Syracuse Upstate medical center were I spent 4 days, Also my blood sugar was over 500, they worked on the Afib with no luck, finely after putting a probe/camera down my throat to check my heart, They then shocked my heart with 2 paddles ,one in front the other on my back (I was knocked out for all that) It did the trick, Heart rate is at 70-90 now. Working on the blood sugar.

I'm sharing this with you so that hopefully some of you don't do the same thing, Don't be a knot head like I was, Take care of yourself, Life is short !

  • Been zapped twice for a fib. They called it a cardio version, only stayed in time for a couple of months. Stress knocked it out, keep that in mind. Now now they want to do a cardio abolation, Have to go to NYC to have it done. They go up down a vein in your neck an up a vein in your groin and burn the muscle in the heart that causes it.. Been a fib for twenty years, I live a normal life, but Iím unique that I have no symptoms.

  • My neighbor was going to have the cardio oblation when they noticed a small tumor in the center of her heart. They went in under her right arm then through her chest and into the heart and removed the tumor and did the oblation at the same time. She is doing fine...the things they can do now is unbelievable. Good luck with your procedure.

  • Somehow after a misspent youth, which is a joy forever, I seem to be in okay shape.
A while back I signed up for an ongoing survey of aging folks. While in the body shop, I told the nurse that no one had called in the last 5 years or more. She checked my file, and told me they were only contacting the folks with problems. So much for my insight.

  • My sugar got to 700 once, I asked the Doc if I win a prize. He wasn't amused. Glad you are ok now Dave. And you are right we need to take better care of ourselves now so that we can enjoy them golden years and pester our kids. I called my cardialogist and have an appointment for the 7th.

  • After reading your post and the 3 follow-up, I think the common denominator is Ford tractor collector syndrom. (Is that political?)
Joking aside, I just found out the results of my EKG last week. A telephone call on day two or our vacation to Texas. I have an aneurysm at 4cm. Damn! That was a diagnosis 5 years ago when it actually turned out to be a tumor in the upper abdomin, non-hodgkins lymphoma.
So, lose some weight, keep blood pressure down, more exercise and no excitement. (the last part is easy, no sex at 7ty-sex) I deal with stress with humor.
All: pay attention to doctors and family. Medicare sucks as for preventative medicine. How do I know? You get a wellness check, hands off. It would NOT have shown any symptoms until too late.
The first issue was noted as a critical aneurysm (5.8 cm) when I paid for "Lifeline Screening" at a clinic hosted by my local township. That was actually my cancer.
This year I told my doctor that I wanted a complete physical. He said Medicare does not pay for that. I said, "I don't care, do it! I'll pay out of pocket." Unhuh! EKG scheduled.
Now, my oldest son, 52, refuses to get a physical. Yup, 13 year Marine. TUFF! No, being stupid and I told him so. Family history of heart trouble and cancers. GRRR!
My father died at 53, second heart attack. My mother had thoracic surgery in 1956 at age 41 at the University of Michigan. She was given max 10 years to live. She survived uteran cancer and then found out she had food allergies all of her life. She lived to 85.
My wife survived cancer 22 years ago. She is 78. My daughter had a melanoma 7 years ago. She is 50.
    Wake up, son!
I'll get off my milk crate stand now. Life is good.

  • I'm another Afib guy. Dave and I chat about it sometimes. My cardiologist stresses exercise and weight loss to help with the stress on the heart. Eating less sugar and carbs and more rabbit food, nuts, more of a Mediterranean Diet helps. Ditch following the "Food Pyramid". It aint as good as we think.

30 lbs lost and more to come for this year.

Go at it Jaco, we are getting old and want to get older. :-)

  • Those ambulance rides are fun. You can keep those rolling Sherman tanks.
500 blood sugar can do some long term organ damage.
Lose some weight to knock down the blood sugar.
Why my blood sugar is not up there is a mystery.
