  • G.M. 5.7 V8 oil pressure issues
  • My 1997 GMC with a 5.7 V8 is losing oil pressure when warmed up at idle, Cold and higher RPM's I have 45 psi. I'm not in a position to R&R the oil pump or bearings at this point and time, Am I slapping myself by thinking a higher viscosity/thicker weight oil might buy me some time ?

  • A higher weight oil might up oil pressure a little bit, but it will not increaxe the flow. A good multi weight should work better.

  • I would have to put a gauge on it to find out what 'low' pressure is.
I would then go to either a 10/40 or 15/40.
You can also add 'Power Punch' to the engine, just when adding those 'molasses' engine oil additives, be sure the engine is fully warmed up and run it for another 10 minutes at least after adding it.

  • I have a '92 5.7 C1500.
I bought it with 28k miles.
I has never had high oil pressure.
It has less than 30 at idle, and maybe 45 on the highway.
I have always run 10/40 Pennzoil oil, not synthetic, with a good quality filter.
It now has 147k miles, and is still the same oil pressure wise.
How many miles on yours, and how long have you had it?

  • Bought my truck with 66k on the clock, Now has 122k.
Ive now noticed I lose all oil pressure at about 1200 rpm's , I'm sure there's some oil still being pumped through the system but not much I'm sure.
