  • A condenser is either "Good" or "Bad" right? My 1951 Country Squire 10 horse B&S runs fine til it gets nice and hot then starts cutting in and out, Sounds more like a coil maybe?

  • On those B&S engines, it is usually the coil which causes that symptom.

    For $5 you can buy a tester which goes between the plug wire and spark plug. ...This is used with the engine running, and you can visually see if the spark is failing, to rule out other possible scenarios.

    Oil on the points, bad condenser, bad spark plug, are other possibilities for ignition failure, but the coil is usually the culprit if it cuts out when hot, but will restart after it cools a bit.

    Believe it or not, but a loose valve seat can also cause the same symptom!

  • I have probably rebuilt over 300-500 Ford Tractor distributors in my life, mostly front mounts. I have never had a "bad" condenser. I almost always replaced the condenser when doing a distributor tune-up/rebuild only because the kit included a new one. I must have a hundred old condensers at the farm in coffee cans. I know recent discussions in the past few years have mentioned that some 'new' condensers are junk out of the box and that I do not doubt what with all the aftermarket Cheena made crap now. Back in the day they made condenser testing units. HEATHKIT made electronic kits you could build yourself and offered a few models. Many are still around including commercial units most service stations and shops had too. How many remember walking into your local drugstore or hardware store and there was a tube testing machine setting there? Those also could test condensers.

  • Not sure where condensers were made in 1973 but I had a bad one in a brand new Ford Maverick, one week old.
    I drove the Maverick to work and then it would not start at the end of the day. The dealer came to the Ford plant, picked up the car and checked it over. They said it was "bad gas". Car ran fine for 4 days. My wife could not start it and I had to call a local Ford dealer. I told them this was the second time in two weeks. I told them that what ever they do, do not tamper with the timing. They towed it and then had the balls to tell me it was timing. When I went to go home it would not start. I told them it was a condenser or a coil.
    After trying the coil they installed a condenser. Walla! Oh, BTW, I ain't paying $50 for your failed repairs and tampering with the timing. I walked out with 1/2 back.
    Then, I went back to my private mechanic who had been doing our tune-ups for years and had him reset the timing. 18 to 19 mpg with factory setting, 23 to 24 mpg with his.
    All for a condenser.

  • I think I can see another problem. The battery is bigger than the engine.
    I have a 6 hp B&S out back that does not run fine. It has been sitting for about 10 years. I suppose I could make it run. It does not have a battery.
    I put an electronic ignition in Herb 9N, and have been smiling ever since.
    And I just installed a cheap Chinese diesel turbine heater. It is blasting warm air around my tootsies.

  • Try charging it up and laying it on your bench. Pick it up tomorrow to see if it held its charge LOL.

  • Condensers can be intermittent and heat is an enemy.

  • I remember when my parents bought a new 1957 Hillman. First run down the motorway, and it stopped dead. Mechanic fixed it PDQ. Condenser quit. On my 53 Bentley, sitting right next to the condenser, was a spare condenser. So RR thought it was a critical part. I would replace the condenser first, as they cost about the same as a hair cut. And then the coil if it is not fexid proppa.

    If I was a modern youth, I would ask, wots a condenser. Be a good idea to check all connections. My XS1100 failed to proceed last week. Was poor contact where the wyres plug in to the idiot box. Ignition module.
