  • Saved another one....
  • My other hobby is old guns, for some odd reason I find it relaxing to bring them back to life. This on is a Smith and Wesson Model of 1902 that I got at an auction. It was in such bad shape that no one would bid on it. The design changed in 1903 and it has a very low serial number, so this one really is a 1902 .38 Special. Of all the problems it had the biggest hurdle was the cylinder just plain worn out. I was able to find a used one from a Model 10-1 that was made in the early 1950's and fit it to the gun. Looks a little odd but it locks up tight and the timing is perfect now. And it can now handle +P ammunition.

Just need to find a good pair of grips and get it blued again and the old dog is ready for a trip to the range. Not bad for 117 years old.

  • Dan, got the part for the New Police 32. It is complete. Will it hurt the value if I re-blue it?

  • I hate to say it but yes a re-blue will lower the value. Collectors like to see the original patina. But the choice is up to you. If you are like me and can't stand looking at a ugly gun you can send it to a well known finisher like Fords in Florida. Its just money and after spending a month getting a gun to function smoothly I would want it to look good. But then most of mine are war guns that have no collector value.

  • Dan, Trying, probably without success, to upload photos of Colt New Police 32 and S&W Military & Police. If it doesn't come through, send me your e-mail and I will send the photo. They look like your kind of toys.

  • I think the gun looks great. You do real good work. Now about the grips. 117 years of How many different sweaty Hands, germs and dirt and layers of wax are on there? If you were a Germaphobe that would run you up the wall. If you could just get a real good cleaning and get back to the real wood I bet they would be a pretty nice grip.

  • Good looking toy. How about a light sanding on the grips an a stain job?
or just hit it "Old English" and let it dry?

  • Nice work. I have a few H&R's that fit that description.
