  • Don't ya hate when that happens?
  • Took apart another old Smith and Wesson revolver today. Soaked it in some mineral spirits for a while then started scrubbing and cleaning.

Found a small pin (about 1/2" long) that did not look familiar. I continued on the whole time wondering where this pin came from or what its purpose was.

Got everything cleaned and oil and the gun reassembled. It functions just fine and yet I have this "extra" pin. Then it struck me, that is not a pin its the "nib" or point from a ball point pen! How it got inside a gun is beyond me but sure had me wondering for a while.

What did you do for fun today?

  • Is that a lanyard ring on the butt? Any history you know on the revolver?

  • It's a 38 Military & Police Model of 1905. S&W shipped it on April 17th 1942 to the British Common Wealth under the "Lend Lease Program". It was then issued to the British Indian Army. Do not know when it was rebuilt by the armory, painted black and shipped back to the US. It is chambered for .38-200 S&W and thanks to me needing something to play with it functions fine now. This is exactly the kind of old gun I like to work on. Toying with the idea of having it blued again just to show it some respect.

  • I would love to have one in 4"(though I doubt they offered one).

    Or a 1917 in .45/4"

  • They were made in 4,5&6". I have my eye on a 1917 chambered for .45acp with a 3" barrel.

  • Hey, Dan. Good to see you back. You have one of those extra or left over parts gremlins staying with you? LOL That was a favorite "stunt" with new automatic transmission techs or when proofreading new repair manuals. I'm sure that "trick" has gone on since the beginning of time.
