  • Plumbing a Cistern
  • I have 30gpm well that is 520'. Static level is below 475'. I placed a 2100 gallon cistern. It is buried about 50' above the roof line of the house. The well head is on the same plane as the foundation of the house. The well head is in the middle of a 400' run from the house to the cistern.

The inlet and outlet for the cistern are on the lower level of the tank about 6" apart. Is there any sound reason why I should not run one poly pipe teed at the well head?

The only benefit I can see to running a separate outlet pipe is that should I spring a leak in the future I could plumb the good pipe with a tee.

    I am using 200 poly.

  • You will have to have a check valve at the space between the tee and the well head.
Are you going to put a float switch in the tank?
If you use a pressure switch the tank will have to be able to hold pressure.
Are you going to have the water tested for hardness and bacteria?
That is a lot of head lift, You will need a big pump.
From my experience, don't use plastic couplers or check valves on plastic pipe. Use brass couplers.

  • There will be a float switch at the tank, the water will be tested, there is a check valve built into the pump but a second one is a good idea, and I use brass fittings.
The cistern enables me to use a smaller pump, run it for longer durations with fewer starts, and be able to flush when the power goes out. Most wells around here are half this deep, but I know of a few that are hundreds of feet deeper.
