  • Home generator
  • My son and I are exploring home generators. He is leaning toward a 20KW Cummins natural gas unit. Does anyone here have any experience with a Cummins or know of any issues with them?

  • Cummins I believe is AKA Onan. Onan is now AKA Chinese quality.
    Generjunk?
You might go over to the other board and look around. Billy Shafer does NOT like to be asked questions directly at the head of a post. Be polite, throw a general question out there and wait for his response. Kinda like fishing. Fishing for free information.
    Good Luck!

  • You can learn a great deal from Billy Schafer in TT on the other board. He has been installing and servicing gensets for decades.

  • I went with a 16kw Generac natural gas. Key is to find a good reputable installer that will give you a good warranty. Past that they are all pretty much the same thing.

  • Hi Dan,
We are looking at doing our own installations. I can do some gas plumbing and my son is electrical tech. These generators come as a complete kit for the electrical conections/controls. Gas company has to determine meter needs.
How much does your installer charge for an annual inspection/oil change? I heard of one in my area who charges $250.

  • Mine came with 8 year warranty and free service.

  • I believe that the going rate is around $300 for annual service.

Be advised, that some companies (did someone say Generac?) are VERY fussy about warranty coverage unless you can demonstrate that an authorized dealer has performed each annual service.

I do my own for the price of the oil and filter but I do not have a Generac.

  • Yup. Automobile mfgrs have done the same for years. I maintained receipts from reputable service providers, not dealers. Never had a problem if a warranty issue occurred. To fight some of the issues, the Federal Gov't required that all service publications be made available to all service shops.

  • Re: Home generator
  • Automobile manufacturers have been prevented from denial of warranty coverage for failure to have service work done by dealers for many years, both by statute and case law.

Generac is well known for using just about anything to deny warranty coverage.

I would not want to be the one to cover the cost of litigation to change this practice.

  • No direct experience but believe that they are made by Onan.
