  • Who grew up with guns in the house?
  • Dad did a lot of gunsmith work and we both were in the NRA matches. I hunted a lot, Dad just hunted squirrel. Yea we had lots of guns around and my Dad taught me to have a high respect for them.

  • That's a great pic, Dan. All these stories really make me miss my dad. He kept a shotgun around as long as I can remember, but mostly told me stories of hunting as a kid with his Crackshot and later with his pump .22.

That movie "A Christmas Story" hit the mark for me except it was a Daisy that you loaded the BBs through a side gate & it was the late 60s. Dad taught me how to be safe with it and later with my 1st .22.

  • My dad taught us about guns and how to properly use and respect them when we were very young. We'd drive 100 miles up to the farm about once a month to visit grandma and there were plenty of fields, woods, and old buildings to hunt on. I was 9, my older brother was 10, and my younger brother was 8. We'd hunt rabbits, deer, and pheasants.

  • 20 gauge shotgun hung over one kitchen door
32 gauge rim fire rifle hung over the other

I have the 20 ga and a nephew has the 32.

  • I did. Grandpa was a gunsmith and dad hunted all the time. As a child, it was nothing for me to check out a .22 and a box of shells and kill cans at the pond for an afternoon. Later, I hunted anything and everything. As an adult, I got into highpower shooting and shot thousands of rounds per year. In the 60's, wearing hearing porotection would have been considered unmanly. Now, I am deaf as a board and wear hearing aids. At 65, I am not as good as I once was, but you probably still don't want to shoot against me.

  • Great photo, Dan. Love all the muzzle loaders. Grew up in the big city so had no hunting experience, but we always had a couple of pistols in the house, loaded and within reach. Dad would let me unload, clean, and reload then if I asked to. Didn't have much money to spend on ammo, but we did get to shoot some, especially when my Uncle came home with a new gun, which was not a rare thing!
I remember when my Uncle came over with a new Ruger single action .22, he handed it to me (I was 8 or 9] I put it on half cock, opened the loading gate, revolved the cylinder to make sure it was not loaded. My Uncle laughed, turned to my Dad and said " I've showed that gun to five guys and he is the only one that knew how to operate it". Made me glad I had watched all those TV westerns!

  • We had a rack or two of guns. Dad brother and I all hunted. Besides the hunting Guns we had some historical firearms. Dad had his post office issued Colt 38 Bankers Specials too. We had great respect for all of them. When in HS we sometimes took our shotguns or rifles to school on the bus, leave them in the office and pick them up after school to go with a friend on another bus to hunt after school. Only incident was once on a bus another teen looking at my 30-30 opened and shut the chamber. Next stop the driver who had heard it stood up and demanded the rifle. Got the gun back at the friends stop but had to do a lot of explaining to him and the principal the next day.

  • My dad didn't hunt but we always had a 30-30, .22, and a shotgun in the house. I learned from my oldest brother (20 and a half years older than me). He was an avid deer, rabbit, and bird hunter all his life. When he hunted with me and my sons he said that I did a good job teaching them gun handling and safety. I told him that I had a good teacher myself.. His praise meant a lot to me, he has been gone over 12 years now, miss him terribly.
