Shark attack pandemic.
I cannot help but wonder if this c-virus is the media version of the shark attack dynamic.
The media has focused on this virus and the media panic just feeds on itself.
A shark bites one person and they close beaches for miles and in multiple states. Some news reporter gets in a helicopter and flies out over the beaches for miles and miles. The panicked reporter reports with video that "holy crap look at all the sharks out there" and the panic feeding frenzy ensues. The beaches remain closed.
Now in reality, all those sharks have always been out there, but there wasn't a reporter flying around out there with a camera.
Another reporter reports that shark attack reports have risen by 500%. Shark attacks did not rise, but reports of shark attacks multiply exponentially.
Now this is all well and good, and the reporters all say that we are just reporting facts and it is our responsibility to protect the "public". Now this is fine too, except now no one wants to go to the beach, all of the stores, restaurants, and hotels have to shut down. All of the people who bought vacation houses to rent out have to go bankrupt.
In The following weeks the reporters gleefully report that they have done their job. There have been no more shark attacks and we are all perfectly fine as long as no one goes into the water.
