  • rough day
  • Granddaughter graduated from college as a meteorologist. She is working part time at an airport as a weather observer and part time at a Kohl's clothing store. Her car (a 2017 Chevy Spark that I gave her while a student) was parked in the parking lot while she was at work and hit by a full size SUV. It was slammed into an adjacent car and then moved over 40 feet afterward.
The irony is that at 1:25pm today, while I was on the road to pick up my new Gravely mower, I heard Rush Limbaugh say that Trump was going to appear this Friday in Michigan at the Oakland County International Airport. I tried to call her about it and my call was going to her voicemail. I was driving and using my cellphone Bluetooth connection in my truck.
As my call was cancelled, I was getting a call from my son, her father. He was going on a rescue mission and filled me in on what had happened.
We were all glad that she was not in the car. I called her later to try to cheer her up.
Also, I have been paying for OnStar for her car and when I checked my e-mails after dinner, I had an OnStar report that an attempted theft had occurred at !:17pm (when the car was hit)
I have all of the monthly systems status reports since the car was new and will provide them to granddaughter and her dad for the insurance claim. A 4 year old car with only 20,000 miles. That sucks!

  • Oh Boy! A weather guesser!! Come on out to the Northwest. Good luck guessing this mess more than 8 hours in advance is a swag most times. Now in the midwest, you can typically estimate the time arriving, departing and amount expected. Not here.

  • Bruce, you've apparently not been in the midwest recently! More than likely safe to plan opposite what they tell you!

However, that may not be the fault of the people doing it. Years ago I had a friend in the government weather station at Burlington, Iowa. He told me, it did not matter what he could see out of the window, he had to read the report wired to him. That was prepared here in Des Moines. Had he had one from Kansas City, it had a better chance of being correct due to the natural flow of the air currents.

  • Granddaughter told me that while at work she goes outside every 15-20 minutes to actually observe the weather at the airport.

  • Great! Apparently, hopefully, they have changed their methods in the last 70 years!

  • Was a weather observer myself in the service. Applied for a job with the Weather Service when I got out. Got a GS 4 rating but, Nixon had a hiring freeze so no job. Went to law school instead. After 41 years getting ready to hang it up and work on hotrods and tractors.
