  • Pickup truck
  • I have a need for a used cheap pickup to pull my trailer. Max weight 3500 pounds. Half ton would be fine. V6 gas. Trucker guy I know said the inline 6 Ford diesel was good, but I can not find any info. My Dodge van pulls the trailer fine on flat roads, but will struggle over the mountains, and the gear box may not last.
Any thoughts from you guys. Modern tech scares me more than old and fixable.

  • I had a '93 Ford Aerostar with the bigger V6 and it pulled my boats for years just fine, even through mountains to Smith Mountain Lake.
Van got 20 mpg when not pulling boat.

My 2001 Ford F-150 has the same basic V-6 but I have not used it to pull the boats, so I cannot vouch for it. The F-150 must be geared lower because it never gets much better then 15 mpg.

I now pull the boats with my 2001 Expedition with the smaller V-8 and it works about the same as the Aerostar, so that V-6 was a good motor in the Aerostar.
The Expedition has never gotten any better then 15 mpg, but it sure is comfortable and has never gotten stuck in snow or mud. I can pull a 20 foot boat and hardly know it is back there until I get to a big steep hill and cannot keep up 65 mph...

As a side note. I did once or twice pull my Chapparal Boat with my Ford Ranger when I was much much younger. It had a five speed so I could climb mountains slowly. But I would not recommend it for any distance, because that boat would push you down a hill and off of turns.

  • Dodge Van. What gearbox? What engine? What rear diff gear? Inline 6 diesel is a new one on me. V-6? Better start reading consumer reports to find the lemon history or possibly even a google search.
I have an '86 F250 460, 373 rear gears with a C6 trans. Dual fuel tanks and will pass anything on the road except a gas station. Carrying a camper does not slow it down to much either. A plugged air filter on the other hand. . . .

  • Dodge van is a 3.3 V6 pushrod front wheel drive auto. I like the motor, and the gear box works fine. But I have been warned that the gearbox can suffer when towing. Rear springs are not that strong either.
I think the guy was thinking about the inline 6 gas motor. Ford 300.
I do not not a heavy 3/4 ton. I want a fuel efficient half ton. The Ford and other V6 gas motors around 4 liters should work. Do not need to pay a hugs amount. $5,000 should do it. Was researching Ford Ranger, but the reviews were not good. Figured someone here should have experience with a lighter truck. My closed in trailer will max at 3500 pounds, and I will add E brakes.

  • Oh! A Caravan. Yeah, 3500# is a bit much for those toys. I am just not much impressed with the older V-6 and towing much of anything behind that to boot. I suspect the google search is going to be your friend, especially on reliability reports.
2,000# behind your Caravan is already enough.
I have looked briefly at 1/2 ton trucks. I like overkill and about the same money to step into a 3/4 ton. Look around, You can find a straight 6 (4.9) in an F150.
