  • Vaccine received
  • My wife and I received our 1st injection, today. No sweat. But, now picture this. Hundreds of seniors, many and maybe most with hearing aids, like my wife and me, trying to follow instrutions from masked attendants, often behind plexiglass and soft spoken, in a building with very poor acoustics. Huh? What? What did you say?
And we didn't have to worry about a stampede. LOL
Before leaving we were scheduled for our 2nd injection in 3 weeks.

  • Michigan and I assume plenty of other states have handled and are handling this mess all wrong. Tier 1 should be Tier 2 and vice versa. GUV should NOT be into medicine. Mom has to schedule an apt via Beaumont Hospital and can never get thru to their site. Mom doesn't do computer so my brother has been doing it.

  • Wife and I got ours (Moderna) this past Monday morning - we go back in 28 days for the 2nd injections. Neither she nor I felt even the stick by two separate RN's, nor have we experience any soreness or side effects after receiving the vaccine. We got the vaccines through our County Health Dept.

  • Larry,

Does Texas schedule your second shot along with the first? Just found out North Carolina handles it that way.

Iowa DOES NOT! Trying to get an appointment is like playing the lottery!

  • Yup. The least discomfort that I have ever experienced for any injection or aftereffect.

  • Nice that you received your shots. Shots here in our county are somewhat by chance. If you saw the lines of old folks waiting for 14 hours or more televised on national TV news that all occurred here. Authorities said no overnight in cars would be allowed but the 1000 that did got the shots. Next day only 500 were allowed to camp in the parking lot so 500 camped beside the road. My neighbors were at the first no camping campout in their camper, they say many in line were tourists. Also had to wait a minimum of 30 minutes after for constant checks by medics, many folks got mildly sick. Next 1000 by computer appt, gone in less than 20 minutes. Ditto the next 1000. 500 given out by a hospital by word of mouth then another 500 the same way. Next 500 at the fairgrounds reservation opened at 9am the day before by computer or phone, shots gone by 9am??? Publix supermarkets advertised all stores will give shots by appt. but on their site they have no vaccine. Looks like a long wait may be in store.

  • That is so sad! Seniors have to pee (and more). Remember these issues at the next (re)election.
I know that won't help now but we seem to be a nation of folks who forget. Write, telephone, email, snailmail all of your government reps and all levels.
It has been said that one letter to a rep is like 500 votes. Word gets around.

  • You are correct. That just happened here in our county. Old guard is out and new council just took office. Hope it works. Here in FL it is not uncommon for local politicians to be on a short leash held by the land developers. That was the big issue and public rights to the beaches another big one. New council says things will go as the voters ask. I have been in touch with the Health Dept about vaccine and they say they can and will do better.

  • Hope it works. My Mom is 92 and is still waiting for her doctor to authorize a shot. She is in the richest county in Michigan, Oakland. Michigan is one of the worse states to get the vaccine. The vaccine is regulated by the state, not doctors. Also, I am 80% deaf and had been learning to read lips when this crap began. I have one hearing aid that is in bad shape. I can't afford batteries all the time as they don't last very long at all so not gonna replace every other day or so. The first thing I encountered when we all had to start wearing masks was I couldn't see faces so couldn't fully understand what people were saying. I realize now that when MI Gov/Czar Whitless began giving he daily propaganda speeches and had an interpreter alongside giving hand signals in sign language, she was also demonstrating we all needed to start learning sign. The other thing with masks is you can't tell when a person is smiling and that means a lot to people even more than spoken words. Granted we won't have much to smile about for the next 4 years.

  • It seems the very old don't do well on this "stuff". You might want to read up on the reactions in the elderly. If my Mum was alive, there is no way in hades I would like her take something that wasn't even properly tested and seems to make getting the virus or similar viruses more deadly. Just my opinion; and you all know the old adage on opinions :-).

  • I'm a youngster at age 90, a few months short of 91. Had my first shot of Maderna last Monday. Arm was a little sore but I could not tell if it was from the shot, blowing 12 inches of snow, or the breaking up and shoveling the remaining pack.

Second shot in about four weeks and then another two weeks for full protection.

Just found out North Carolina schedules your second shot along with your first! Certainly wish Iowa did that as fighting your way through the websites is not easy. And I've owned a computer since 1988.

  • Sounds like a good deal.
Where did you go to get it?
    What type was it?
    Thanks for the info.

  • We are in Washtenaw County, Michigan. Ann Arbor is the county seat. The county Health Department announced last week a planned schedule starting today IF the vaccine was received. The Health Department provided a scheduling page. I was on it ASAP and secured appointments for my wife and me.
The appointments were locked but, we had to check e-mail this morning to see if the vaccine had been received, and it had.
It went well, for the most part and, before leaving, we scheduled the 2nd dose for 3 weeks later. These are confirmed timeslots.
The process was conducted in the Eastern Michigan University Convocation Center which is about 6 miles away.

  • Great and congratulations! Think I'm going to have to change my residence to Michigan!

We have a Governor who apparently can't think for herself and is loosing her tutor.

I'm 90 years old, 23 years out on a major heart attack and still have no idea when or where I'll get it! My doctor just moved to the Va so at the moment I have none. Wife's doctor's office says they do not expect vaccine before April!

Our daughter is a Pulmonologist and has now had both of her shots. Thank goodness as she has been caring for Covid patients. But she has no information for us either.

We're in the Group to start February 1st but no information as to how to get on a list someplace!

  • Check with your local Health Department. That was how we did it. However, listening to the news, every state is doing it differently. West Virginia Gov. was on TV this morning. They have used all the vaccine that they were allocated and could have done more if it was available. They are using small local facilties efficiently.

  • Thanks John,

IF "our group" actually starts on February 1st I'll be content. Not happy but content. It could have been done more efficiently I'm sure.

Just as with masks our Governor has decided to ignore the Federal guidance and do it her way!

Spoke with a receptionist at a dental office this morning. They just received emails notifying them to register which they have done. I presume something like that will transpire for the rest of us but I have no idea how they would have my email.

I believe less than half of the shots delivered to the state have been used so far.

I was wondering if you got it at your doctors office, or if you had to go to a government facility. My doctors office says they will not be getting it.
Makes me wonder why they don't just distribute it through regular doctors office.

  • Medicap Pharmacy is one of the places giving them here. Walgreens is giving them to nursing homes and such but as far as I know not to the general public. Too bad as I have one about two blocks from the house.

  • My supplemental health insurance rquires us to buy our meds. at Walgreen. I was in contact with them and that was how I was referred to the Health Department and their website for scheduling.
Be persistent. Good luck to all of you!

  • I suspect that it would be a logistics nightmare and the Dr offices do not have the refridgeration needed.

  • Takes longer to get a Dr. appointment than waiting for the vaccine.
