  • Are the Green Deal socialibs waking up??? Canít pass up a good topic to spoof when itís right there even by the PMSNBC producers/writers of SNL. Electric cars. John in Mich sent me a link to this ad spoof recently done on SNL by Seinfeld alumni Julia Louse-Dreyfus, aka Elaine. Itís the new electric Mercedes Benz powered by over 3000 AA batteries. Top speed 52 MPH!!! I canít find a link that is valid anymore-seems you tube took them down. This isnít the first time electric cars were being looked at. Back in the 70ís they were also being considered. There was an old late night spoof on TV soap operas and late night talk shows called ďFernwood ToniteĒ with Martin Mull as the host. He once had guest WD Bud Prize who had invented an electric car. It was an AMC Gremlin and when he popped the hood it had nothing but D-Cell batteries in the engine compartment.

  • Lady down the road just got a Prius. She is getting 150 mpg. Do not know how much electricity she is using. Should have that report later this year. Nearly all our electricity is hydro generated. Or costs are a bit less too. We have lots of 2 and 3 wheeled bicycles and tricycles on the Island. There is even a free charging station at the top of the Island, but often a big pick up will park in that spot. It really upsets the E users. The big problem with most powered things is weight. The crash test standards do not help with reducing weight. Next is rolling resistance, and over about 50, wind drag. There is some good video of the Ebikes going around the IOM. Isle of Man. They race every year in June. A local guy builds bicycles and tricycles. He built the worlds fastest bicycle that went 82 mph. Record since broken, just. Another guy installed batteries and motor in a motorcycle, after ditching the gas motor. Bright kid.
And our loonie left government has said all vehicles sold after 2040 must be zero emissions. Forgot the name of the company near here that has been working on hydrogen power forever.

  • Back in the 40's when I was a youngster hanging out on Mack Ave in Detroit we would always cheer loudly when an old lady with her Baker Electric would roll past. She was from a prominent old Detroit family but 70 years later just can't recall her name. It was a sight to see, she always had all the proper driving gear including long flowing black apparel with a veiled bonnet as well. She loved her Baker.

  • HUH, Louie. I didn't spend but a minute trying to find a valid link ok? John sent me a link that worked but I could not get a url for it so I just plugged in 'SNL Electric Car YouTube', got a list but as I started selecting them they all showed the videos had been removed/taken down. whatever.

  • The thing that always gets me about electric cars is that everyone seems to think that they are free to buy and free to charge. Electricity costs 12 cents per kilowatt hour here and that gets you 1000 watts for one hour. It takes 750 watts to generate 1 hp. So 100 hp would need 75000 watts or 75 kwh. 75 x 12 cents is $9 per hour to run at 75000 watts.
That is about equal to 3 gallons of gas per hour in cost to run the electric motor.
A van getting 25 mpg would go 75 miles on 3 gallons of gas and has a range of at least 400 miles.
So I don't see the great advantage of an electric car that will barely haul 2 people and also costs twice as much to buy and has a range of only 150 miles.
Also, a lot of the lithium battery "cells", are really a bunch of AA size batteries bundled together in series to get 12 or 24 volts and then bundeled in parallel to get a bunch of amps. That is why they will burn and start a chain reaction melting down once they overheat.
Then there is initial cost. You will pay about $10,000 more for a Nisson Leaf then for a Chrysler Town and Country. I can buy a lot af gas for $10k.
    10,000 / $2.5 for a gallon = 4000 gallons I can buy. 4000 x 25mpg = 100,000 miles.
You can drive a Town and country 10,000 miles a year for 10 years for the extra cost to produce a Nisson Leaf.
So how does this save the environment??
If a Nisson Leaf costs $10,000 more to produce up front, then the way I see it is that is using $10,000 more in resources to produce. A lot of thise resources may just be fossil fuels.
So to me the hype is all slight of hand that just costs more for the consumer.
We need to come up with a gog equivilent. Cost of anything should be equated to the cost of a gollon of gas. gog.
So if you have to pay 10k more for an electric car then it has to save 4000 gog in its first 5 years to make it environmentally friendly.
I often wonder if you could take all the costs involved in producing "green" products, that many of them consume more fossil fuels then their simple non green counterparts.

  • It takes fossil fuel/carbon to make a battery.

  • That is correct. A lot of fossil fuel is consumed building an electric car. Also, where I live a lot of fossil fuel is used to produce electricity. I also wonder if they ever figured out what to do with nuclear waste?

  • Show me the math.
I am happy to learn something new.
I used values given for a Nissan Leaf.
I would like to see where you can buy 75 kwh for $2,00.
Oh and by the way, you have to sit around for an hour while you charge enough for 75 miles.

  • So, you are not going to run your heater or air conditioning or radio. Because if you do you cut your range in half and the 150 mile range is in ideal conditions and is a Maximum range. Real to earth figures are more like what I used.
How do you run a 150 hp motor with 3000 watts? 1hp equals 750 watts. So just 100 hp will consume 75000 watts.
Also, your range will further diminish if you start and stop.
Also, you should factor in the additional fuel consumption used to build the vehicle.
Until you can show me some real world experiece I will stick with my real figures and not believe the sales hype.

  • I can copy paste this string and it has played. AOC plan for replacing fossil fuels.
