The Race About Race
Coleman Young, the first Negro mayor of Detroit, served from 1974 to 1994. In 1973, when he first ran, it was all about race defeating his white opponent. Young was a far left militant democrat/socialist. Detroit had a black population of just under 50% in 1973 but 90% of the police force was white. Young fought to change that and won. He then won subsequent terms by large margins with the majority black democratic voters in Detroit as most whites had migrating to the northern suburbs. Young's term as mayor is cited in books, and rightly so, as the main reason for the decline of Detroit. Crime rose, drug s rose, and of the city saw the most boarded up houses than ever before -then or since. In the 1980's drug gangs began to jockey for position and one group was called the Pony Boys because the runners all wore a popular tenner shoe called PONY. Another gang were called The Young Boys. Though many runners were kids in every gang because if they were busted they could get off easier as juveniles. However, the real reason they were called the Young Boys was that they were supported by Coleman Young with money and guns. Young was into the Detroit mafia big time. Now comes the interesting part. I heard this morning on WJR's Paul W. Smith's show as he talked about people who had been given the key to the city and the traditional Thanksgiving Day parade. Coleman Young gave a key to the city of Detroit to Saddam Hussein! Young had given Saddam a $200,000 'donation' to when he was the president of Iraq in the early 1980's. Don't bother trying to google this or last part or looking it up on Wikipedia as you won't find it. In 2003 George Bush and Tony Blair of the UK led a group to take down Saddam and succeeded. The intel they had proved there were weapons of mass destruction in his country and a link to Al-Quaeda and still today there are many socialibs who say it was all a farce. Detroit would later have another black mayor, Kwame Kirkpatrick, also into the Detroit mafia, who is serving time in prison for his corruption conviction as mayor. There are still Detroit residents who would vote for both of those guys today if they ran. It's all about race.
