  • Minimum wage
  • I'm calling this post about the minimum wage. At least, I think it's involved somehow.

One of the Walmart stores here in Lubbock, Texas (there are five I think) has redone their front end. You are all probably familiar with the self checkout areas showing up in Walmart and other stores. This last week this Walmart added more self checkout registers. I didn't count, but 2/3rd's of the checkouts are now self serve in that store. And, the remaining 6 or 8 were mostly empty of workers.

Is this Walmart's answer to a minimum wage hike? I would bet it is. Two people were kinda roaming around making sure everyone was doing whatever they should be doing, checking out their own groceries, etc.

I have mixed feelings about participating in this. The one full service grocery chain here seems to be doing OK from the outside looking in. I shop there as well, knowing the prices are not exactly competitive on the things I buy. I also know that there are very few, if any, of their workers make minimum wage. I think they start everyone above that.

I know that Walmart does everything to make a buck, but I wonder if the added security, cameras and personnel, are worth the difference, given that it's known that cheating is pretty rampant in these areas.

    Just thinking out loud.........

  • As Rush and others stated many times, minimum wage was not intended to be made into a life-long career like socialibs think today. I worked all my life. Shoveling snow and mowing grass in the neighborhood as a youngster. At 13 I was a newspaper boy til I was 15 and I earned about $10 weekly and then only if people paid on time. I then began to caddy at 15, earning $4 per 'loop' which took about 4 hours to play 18 holes. Tips were extra and usually only 25₵ or 50₵ if you were lucky. Doubles were extra but if you worked two loops a day, that made for a long day for a 15-year old. Then I'd have to hitchhike or walk 5 miles home. When I turned 16 I got a part time job after school at a car wash earning $1.65 per hour as that was the minimum wage then. When I turned 17 that summer I got a job in a small job-shop factory, on the midnight shift, earning $3.25 per hour. It was grinding cast iron parts for Chrysler. It was hot, and so combined with the sweat an cast iron dust you'd be orange by the end of the shift. Today, you can't get a millennial to shovel snow or mow grass at his/parents' own house let alone go around the neighborhood to earn some fast cash. Many now depend on mommy & daddy and the government to support them. Note they ALL have cell phones and cigarettes. Some even have mom & dad buy their pot and beer too. I'm not sure if some of them even know which end of a snow shovel to use.

  • Tim,

I got lucky in the fact that my youngest son has a good work ethic. Always looking to make money doing whatever needs to be done. He has worked since 10 at a local greenhouse. I asked the owner for him and he is still working there at 16. Shovels snow as needed for people and throws hay if the locals ask him.

He tries to find work so I canít complain. His mother takes 50% of his earnings and puts it in his bank account for college expenses. My oldest son works at her family business when not in college.

    I will not tolerate laziness.

  • I am waiting for minimum wage to swing a bigger circle and raise the cola's.
Never mind that the new lower class will now be payed at a higher wage. I ran into some of those high skilled employees today at the hardware store.
"I'm getting paid be the hour..." Good luck guy. Your future looks bright to me.
So that $5.00 burger just jacked up to $10, or is it going to be $15?

I wonder if this country can survive the next 4 years? Good luck.
This ought'a be fun to watch from the side lines.
Hope to see another 1.3% cola on SS next year also. Don't think it will happen.
Come on Bernie! He said he was going to fix SS. That makes more sense than sending more money to chinavirus land.

  • Below is my latest email to Debbie Dingle, my US Rep:

We received your latest Blather. What a disgrace! You have to hide until 2:30am to pass this monstrosity! Less than 10% is for actual Covid relief. Do you actually believe that the American public is so stupid? AS I SAID IN MY LAST EMAIL, WE DO NOT HAVE TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS!

Let me see if I have this right:
    A tunnel in Silicon Valley?
Checks for Illegals? YES, I SAID ILLEGALS!
    Expansion of "Obama Care"?
    Union pension bailouts?
Bailouts for poorly managed state budgets?
    Raising the minimum wage?
Money for closed schools? Get real!
    How much more pork?

  • Dingleberry et al are examples of why there needs to be term limits. Add too the illegals now will get Cheena 19 vaccines BEFORE Americans. Many real US Americans still haven't received theirs. My daughter is a teacher a the local public HS and they were all supposed to get vaccinated months ago then they cancelled it. Now that Whitless is opening the schools next week full time, my daughter is concerned. Rush called it again as he often did that we'd see things opening up once the erection was over and Mr. Biden sat in the big chair.

  • The American people should be outraged, unfortunately not many of them if any see this. All they see is the 1400 that is coming there way, not the tunnel, not he bridge, not the healthcare and COVID shots for the ILLEGALS. No news on that GREAT governor of NY either. This has to stop. God help our country and our grandchildren..

  • My second e-mail to Debbie today
  • You are a threat to my family! I have family living near the southern boarder. I have family living on the west coast. I have family living on the east coast. You willingly support Biden and the open door at the southern boarder. You are a threat to my family!
