  • Good news. Not a fan of wind generated energy, although, in some locations it may be practical. It is quite expensive, unsightly and kills birds. Years ago, a lawyer friend, who is also educated as a physicist, suggested we use small nuke reactors in bunches at nuclear (or as "W" would say, "nuclar") generation plants. That way maintenance could be rotating and power always available. The Navy has used them for years to power ships, so the tech is readily available and proven. I see the powers-that-be starting to consider that option, especially with the energy growing needs of the AI industry. Makes sense to me. What took them so long?

  • I've been an advocate of small nuclear reactors as power generation means for years.

    As an engineer as well as an attorney, I well remember trying to debate such things with the English and History majors that I worked with who "knew better."

    SMRs are the ideal power sources for data centers as well as other facilities having large power requirements.

    Ironically, it appears that we may be coming full circle to the times when large industrial plants, e.g., Ford plants, generated their own power on site. There is a wonderful (and enormous) Corliss reciprocating steam engine/generator from a Ford plant preserved at the Ford Museum in Dearborn MI.

  • The Highland Park Model T Plant used several of these enormous Corliss steam engine/generator units to provide power for the facility.

    One is preserved and on display at the Ford Museum in Dearborn, MI.

    This is the technology that replaced water wheels, and later steam engines, powering overhead line shafts to drive individual machines via leather belts.

    Fascinating.
