  • MSDS Data On Products We All Use
  • The most popular of handy mechanic fastener looseners is WD-40. It is a good idea to know what you are using and how to store it, precautions in its usage, and the handling of emergencies such as eye contact.

This is all I could find on the web for a MSDS:

WD-40's formula is a trade secret. The product is not patented to avoid completely disclosing its ingredients.[4][7] WD-40's main ingredients, according to U.S. Material Safety Data Sheet information, are:
    51% Stoddard solvent
25% liquefied petroleum gas (presumably as a propellant; carbon dioxide is now used instead to reduce WD-40's considerable flammability)
15+% mineral oil (light lubricating oil)
    10-% inert ingredients

The German version of the mandatory EU safety sheet lists the following safety-relevant ingredients:
60–80% heavy naphtha (petroleum product), hydrogen treated
    1–5% carbon dioxide

It further lists flammability and effects to the human skin when repeatedly exposed to WD-40 as risks when using WD-40. Nitrile rubber gloves and safety glasses should be used. Water is unsuitable for extinguishing burning WD-40.

Wired published an article giving the result of gas chromatography and mass spectroscopy: "What's Inside WD-40? Superlube's Secret Sauce

I'm going to list all the other products many of us tractor guys have in our shops. Save a copy and print out for handy reference in your barn, shed, garage, or shop.

  • 303 AEROSPACE PROTECTANT
  • Yet another product that does not list chemical composition/ingredients. What are they hiding? It has nothing to do with 'aerospace' folks, merely a term they use for the unsuspecting consumer. There is no magical/mystical secret nutty professor/Buddy invention that keeps vinyl and rubber from rotting. My research has stated this stuff will promote rotting over tome and the best thing to prevent UV rays is to keep out of the sun. Caveat Emptor.

  • LACQUER THINNER
  • Lacquer thinner is about the best substance to use on carb cleaners and degreasing parts. There's nothing phony about it. It combines Methyl, Ethanol, Acetone, Mineral Spirits and a few others.

  • Corrosion X
  • Here is the MSDS link to Corrosion Technologies Corporations' web site on their excellent product, 'Corrosion X'. This stuff works great as a lubricant, penetrant, and rust protectant on all electrical connections. I use it exclusively on all my tractor electrical connections.

  • Federal Process Corporation -GASOILA
  • This LINK will take you to the Federal Process Corporations' web site. They make numerous products, GASOILA, FREE All, and a few other excellent products. I can personally testify that those two at least for me work superbly. GASOILA, a thread sealant, I use on sediment bowl assemblies to screw into gas tanks. The FREE ALL spray product works great, maybe better than PB BLASTER. There is detailed info on GASOILA in a post I made on our HISTORY forum.

  • PROLONG ENGINE OIL TREATMENT
  • Once again, another skeptical product. Manufacturer claims confidential info for the ingredients, but note it still contains petroleum distillates, mineral spirits in laymen terms. I'm not saying that this product works or doesn't work. Your money so you be the judge but don't succumb to the placebo syndrome and 'think' it is helping without data to back it up.

  • "In the world of marketing. there's no such thing as a lie merely convenient exaggerations."

Original formulation of Slick 50 is not what's being sold as Slick 50 today. Interesting story here: A Marketing Group owns trademark/product called Slick 50, but never owned original formulation they marketed as Slick 50.

This from video interview of originator and inventor of product promoted/labeled and first product sold as Slick 50.

It is what it is and what it is, is "caveat emptor" ! :-) That's why I enjoy YouTube channel Project Farm's trials of commercial products to find the "real deal".

  • STAR*TRON GASOLINE ADDITIVE
  • Yet still another 'snake-oil' product -buyer beware! There's no scientific way/proof to 'neutralize' ethanol in gasoline. Note the product contains mostly, it says, 95% Solvent Naphtha(Mineral Spirits/petroleum distillates) and what is ‘proprietary organic compounds’ ??? Organic can be anything...

In food, I think that might be bugs, mouse crap, and the occasional finger remnants . I don't know about fuel additives.

  • Re: MSDS Data On Products We All Use
  • Here's the link to the company web site that makes the 303 Aerospace Protectant MSDS info. They don't list what it is made of, just simply stating ingredients are Proprietary. Multiple uses listed, one is for protecting synthetic and natural rubber from weather checking. Recommends applying every 5-6 weeks for maximum protection.

  • MSDS -STABIL
  • Here's the MSDS data on the product STABIL -fuel additive. The main ingredient is petroleum distillates (mineral spirits) about 95%. Also, the reply I received from the parent company, Gold Eagle, is below...

    Dear Tim Daley,

Thank you for your questions regarding STA-BIL(r) Fuel Stabilizer . STA-BIL(r) Fuel Stabilizer is a petroleum distillate based formulation with many proprietary ingredients making up the additive mixture of active ingredients. The proprietary additive mixture includes anti-oxidant, detergent, and anti-corrosion additives. Please see the MSDS attached. These active ingredients in STA-BIL(r) Fuel Stabilizer have the following benefits:

STA-BIL(r) Fuel Stabilizer will keep fuel fresh for up to 12 months, guaranteed.

STA-BIL(r) Fuel Stabilizer prevents the formation of gums and varnish that can clog fuel injectors, and actually contains a fuel injector cleaner to further improve your engine's performance.

STA-BIL(r) Fuel Stabilizer works equally well for both 2-cycle (gas and oil mixture) and 4-cycle engines. STA-BIL(r) brand can be used in engines with any number of cylinders.

Depending on the quality, type and source of the gasoline, as well as storage conditions, doubling the dosage rate of STA-BIL(r) brand could prolong this storage time to up to 2 years. STA-BIL(r) Fuel Stabilizer is designed for use during STORAGE of any gasoline equipment or vehicle stored for 30 days or more, or used infrequently. It will keep gas fresh for 12 months, and help prevent corrosion, and gum and varnish formation. It is effective in all gasolines, including Ethanol blends, including E-85.

The STA-BIL(r) formula was also improved over a year ago to include additional corrosion protection to protect against the damaging effects experienced when using Ethanol blended fuels. The best way to protect your fuel system from Ethanol blended fuels related issues year-round (not just during storage), we recommend using new STA-BIL Ethanol Treatment. For Marine engines, such as a boat or jet-ski, we recommend Marine Formula STA-BIL Ethanol Treatment which has been specifically formulated for the extra severe conditions faced by these engines.

Please let us know if you have any additional questions.

    Best Regards,
    Scott Fisher

  • MSDS -STP Oil Treatrment 4-Cylinder
  • Old as car racing itself. Used by many, in all motors. This is the popular 4-cylinder oil treatment STP started with. Parent Company is Armor-All nowadays. The STP product line is along list so only am linking to the oil treatment product.

  • MSDS -LOCTITE Red Threadsealant
  • Long time company of many fine products from Super Glue to RTV silicon gasket making, their Threadlocking products started it all. The best selling all time product for permanently locking a fastener to prevent it from coming loose is the Red trademark item. I also like their red and blue RTV gasket making products as well.

  • MSDS -Permatex Anti-Seize
  • Use on many applications to prevent nuts and bolts from freezing up when it's time to remove them again. I link the Permatex brand here because that is what I have used for many years although there are other manufacturers that are just as good. Actual ingredients vary company to company but they are probably all very similar in composition. If you want a specific brand, you'll have to do further research on your own.

  • MSDS -MMO (Marvel Mystery Oil)
  • I found a little info other than the actual MSDS as found via the LINK...

The facts speak for themselves, folks. The link shows MMO contains:

    74% -Mineral Oil

    25% -Stoddard Solvent*

    1% -Lard

*Stoddard Solvent is defined as Mineral Spirits, for one.
