  • Anyone own any Gearwrench ratchets? Looking to add a long handled 1/2" ratchet to my collection. Craftsman doesn't make one currently. Can't afford Snap-on. :-)

Wondering about the quality of these ratchets.

    Thanks,
    Tyler

  • Stuff like that is best bought from yard sales. I have two 1/2" snap-on breaker bars that I got at a yard sale for $1 each and a craftsman for 50 cents. I took the craftsman into sears and traded it for a new one. I like a good yard sale LOL

  • Only a year warranty ??, I know there's a life time warranty on the gear wrench's,I have a Snap-on 1/2" long ratchet that's a twin to that one, bought it years ago on sale from Snap-On for about the same money as that. Be sure that's what you want, I find the longer handle getting in my way a lot of the time, I end up using a standard length ratchet most of the time.

  • Considering a ratchet was not intended to be used as a breaker bar, it should last a life time. If you, like a few million others, utilize a ratchet for breaking fasteners loose then the life expectancy will be reduced. This is especially true with the fine tooth ratchets such as your looking at. Yes, proper tool usage is a pita. That is why that near useless breaker bar is in the bottom of the tool box. Somewhere in my collection is the never ever used 1/4 inch breaker bar along with the seldom seem 3/8 inch and the one or two broken 1/2 in breaker bars. That is called too cheap to get the 3/4 drive until recently. I was eyeing a $12 1/2 inch Harbor freight bender bar yesterday. I say bender bar because at $12 how far do you think it will go before it breaks? Somewhere around here is a working 1/2" breaker bar.
Along with that nice long handled flex head 1/2 inch Craftsman ratchet. That also doubled as a breaker bar in the past, say it ain't so.

  • I would bet the ratchet is pretty good. I have a number of the original Gearwrenches and can't seem to destroy them. And yes, I have used them like breaker bars as well. I was unaware they marketed a regular ratchet like this.
